Start By:

  1. Remove the final drive cases. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive Case - Remove and Install".

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Note: Check the condition of all seals and of all components. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

    NOTICE

Too much pressure on the pinion shaft can cause damage to the gear.

  1. Use the following steps in order to remove the pinion shaft from the gear.

    1. Put the gear and the pinion shaft in a press, as shown.

    1. Put a small amount of pressure on the pinion shaft with a press.

    1. Push the ring in the groove on the pinion shaft with a hammer and a punch.

Note: The ring will stay in the groove because of the pressure that is on the pinion shaft.

    1. The pinion shaft will slide out of the gear when the ring is completely in the groove.

  1. Drain the oil from the bevel gear case and the steering clutch case.
