NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Note: Check the condition of all seals and of all components. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

  1. Check the condition of the seal that is located in the fuel filter base, that seals the top of the primary filter housing. If it is necessary, replace the seal.

  1. Connect four tube assemblies (6) .

  1. Install filter element (10) in filter housing (9) .

  1. Lightly lubricate the seal for the primary filter housing with engine oil.

  1. Install the element and filter housing (9) on the fuel filter base. Tighten retaining bolt (8) to a torque of 25 ± 6 N·m (18 ± 4 lb ft).

  1. Clean the mounting surfaces for the secondary filter that is on the fuel filter base.

  1. Lubricate the seal of the secondary filters with clean diesel fuel.

  1. Install two secondary fuel filters (7). Tighten filters 3/4 of a turn after the gasket contacts the surface of the filter base.

  1. Connect electric plug (5) .

  1. If pressure switch (3) was removed, tighten the switch to a torque of 52 ± 5 N·m (39 ± 4 lb ft).

  1. If only the fuel priming pump was removed, install the gasket at the base of pump (2). Install fuel priming pump (2). Install bolts (1) and tighten to 25 ± 6 N·m (19 ± 4 lb ft). Install bolt (4) .

End By:

  1. Install the engine side guards. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Side Guards - Remove and Install".
  2. Install the enclosures for the engine. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Enclosure - Remove and Install".
