G3500 A3 Engines Caterpillar

Engine Shutdown

Usage:

G3508 DLR

Probable Causes

  • Activation of the emergency stop switch or customer shutdown switch by the operator

  • Emergency stop circuit

  • Circuit for the customer shutdown switch

  • Emergency stop switch or customer shutdown switch

Recommended Repairs

Actions

Note: The Electronic Control Module (ECM) immediately terminates the ignition during the activation of the emergency stop switch. Unburned gas remains in the air inlet and exhaust system.

------ WARNING! ------

Unburned gas in the air inlet and exhaust system may ignite when the engine is started. Personal injury and/or property damage may result.

Before starting an engine that may contain unburned gas, purge the unburned gas from the air inlet and exhaust system. Refer to the topic on purging unburned gas in the "Starting the Engine" section.

Activation of the Emergency Stop Switch or Customer Shutdown Switch by the Operator

Talk to the operator and determine the reason for the emergency stop shutdown. Confirm that the condition for the emergency stop shutdown has been resolved. Reset the control system. Resume normal operation.

Emergency Stop Circuit

The emergency stop circuit utilizes a low side ECM driver in order to detect the state of the emergency stop switch. The circuit must remain in the grounded state in order for the engine to run.

Inspect the wiring between the switches and the connector of the ECM for damage and/or corrosion. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Inspecting Electrical Connectors".

Close the emergency stop switch and check the resistance between terminals P1-22 and P1-31 at the ECM connector.

The circuit must be continuous while the emergency stop switch is closed. If the circuit is not continuous, locate the source of the excessive resistance. Repair the circuit. Replace components, if necessary.

Circuit for the Customer Shutdown Switch

The circuit for the customer shutdown switch utilizes a low side ECM driver in order to detect the state of the emergency stop switch. The circuit must remain in the grounded state in order for the engine to run.

Inspect the wiring between the switches and the connector of the ECM for damage and/or corrosion. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Inspecting Electrical Connectors".

For the customer shutdown switch, close the switch and check the resistance between terminals P1-22 and P1-31 at the ECM connector.

The circuit must be continuous while the customer shutdown switch is closed. If the circuit is not continuous, locate the source of the excessive resistance. Repair the circuit. Replace components, if necessary.

Inspect the Stop Switches

Inspect the stop switches for evidence of damage that has been caused by vibration, moisture, or corrosion. Disassemble the switches. Inspect the components for looseness, cracks, and abrasion. When possible, check the switch contacts for arcing. Check the continuity of the contacts. Toggle the switches in order to check for proper electrical operation.

Replace any faulty components.
