Flywheel Housing - Remove and Install

Start By:

  1. Remove the crankshaft rear seal. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft Rear Seal - Remove".

  2. Remove the electric starting motor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Electric Starting Motor - Remove and Install".


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

  1. Remove bolts (1) that fasten the engine oil pan to flywheel housing (2).

  2. Install Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device on flywheel housing (2). The weight of flywheel housing (2) is approximately 80 kg (175 lb).

  3. Remove bolts (3). Remove the flywheel housing from the cylinder block.

  4. Remove gasket (4) from the flywheel housing.

NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.


    Note: Thoroughly clean the flywheel housing and the rear face of the cylinder block. These components must be free of the following substances: oil, fuel, water, gasket adhesive, assembly compounds, and any other foreign material.

  1. Install Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device on flywheel housing (2). The weight of flywheel housing (2) is approximately 80 kg (175 lb).

  2. Install gasket (4) on the dowel pins of the cylinder block. Apply Tooling (B) to the bottom of gasket (4) in order to fill the space at the cylinder block, the flywheel housing, and the engine oil pan.

  3. Position flywheel housing (2) on the cylinder block. Install bolts (3) and remove Tooling (A).

  4. Tighten the bolts, as follows:

    1. In a numerical sequence, tighten Bolt (1) through Bolt (9) to a torque of 100 ± 20 N·m (30 ± 15 lb ft).

    2. In a numerical sequence, tighten Bolt (10) through Bolt (24) to a torque of 40 ± 10 N·m (30 ± 7 lb ft).

    3. In a numerical sequence, again tighten Bolt (1) through Bolt (9) to a torque of 135 ± 20 N·m (100 ± 15 lb ft).

    4. In a numerical sequence, again tighten Bolt (10) through Bolt (24) to a torque of 55 ± 10 N·m (40 ± 7 lb ft).

  5. Install bolts (1) that fasten the engine oil pan to flywheel housing (2).

End By:

  1. Install the electric starting motor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Electric Starting Motor - Remove and Install".

  2. Install the crankshaft rear seal. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft Rear Seal - Install".
