Metal Particles On Magnetic Pick-Up Can Permit Engine RPM To Vary; Move Pick-Up To A New Location{1289}

Usage:

D349 Industrial And Marine Engines

Reports show that it is possible, in some applications, for metal particles from the starter pinion and the flywheel teeth to fall on the magnetic pick-up assembly in the flywheel housing. These particles can cause the pick-up to give a wrong indication of engine rpm and permit the engine rpm to vary (change).

If this is a problem on your engines, the magnetic pick-up can be moved to a different location on the top of the flywheel housing. Use the procedure that follows to change the location of the magnetic pick-up.

1. Machine a new hole in the flywheel housing as shown in the illustration.

2. Install the 3N3515 Adapter in the new hole.

3. Install the magnetic pick-up until it just makes contact with the flywheel.

4. Turn the magnetic pick-up back out 1/2 turn or 0.56 to 0.76 mm (.022 to .030").

5. Tighten the locknut to a torque of 70 ± 14 N·m (50 ± 10 lb ft).

6. Install a 3J3429 Plug in the original location of the pick-up.
