Installation of 7C9760 (12V) or 8N3569 (24V) Fuel Boost Pump Group{1250, 1256, 1260} Caterpillar

Installation of 7C9760 (12V) or 8N3569 (24V) Fuel Boost Pump Group{1250, 1256, 1260}

Usage:

All Caterpillar Diesel Engines with Either a 12 Volt or 24 Volt Electrical System

Introduction

Depending on the voltage of the engine electrical system, one of the fuel boost pump groups given above can be installed for use on a specific engine. Installation of a fuel boost pump will assist the standard fuel transfer pump, and give better fuel delivery in those instances where it is needed. A primary fuel filter is included in the fuel boost pump group, and must also be installed. Use the following procedure to install the fuel boost pump group.

Installation of Fuel Boost Pump Group

The above schematic shows the location of fuel system parts after installation of the fuel boost pump group is complete.

Parts shown in the schematic are as follows: 1. Fuel supply tank. 2. Primary fuel filter. 3. Fuel boost pump. 4. Mounting clips (two). 5. Water separator. 6. Fuel filter (existing). 7. Fuel injection pump and governor. 8. Fuel boost pump ground wire (black). 9. Fuel boost pump power supply wire (brown).

NOTE: Install the primary fuel filter and the fuel boost pump as near as possible to fuel supply tank (1).

1. Disconnect the battery and shut off the fuel supply to the engine.

2. Install 7W7831 Primary Fuel Filter (2) in a location that will provide for easy access when filter service is required. Be sure to install primary filter (2) so the IN port is toward the fuel supply tank.

NOTE: The IN and OUT ports in the filter base of primary fuel filter (2) are straight thread O-ring for No.8 port, with 3/4"-16 threads.

3. Install fuel boost pump (3) on a good solid surface that does not have, or cause, a vibration. The fuel boost pump must be installed in a location where it will not be damaged by too much water, or any other foreign material.

4. Fuel boost pump (3) must, also, be installed in a location that is not more than 610 mm (24.0") above the bottom of fuel supply tank (1). The IN port of fuel boost pump (3) must be toward primary fuel filter (2).

5. Use mounting clips (4) to fasten fuel boost pump (3) securely in position.

NOTE: The IN and OUT ports of fuel boost pump (3) have 1/4"-18 threads for fuel line connections.

6. Install and connect the fuel line from fuel supply tank (1) to primary fuel filter (2), then connect the fuel line from primary fuel filter (2) to fuel boost pump (3).

7. Now, connect a fuel line from fuel boost pump (3) to water separator (5). Connect the fuel line from water separator (5) to existing fuel filter (6), and then from existing fuel filter (6) to fuel injection pump and governor (7).

8. The black electrical wire (8) is the ground wire. Clean all paint and rust from the location where the ground wire is to be connected to the machine. Use 16 gauge electrical wire for the ground connection.

9. The brown electrical wire (9) is for the power supply connection, and must be connected as follows:

* If the fuel boost pump is to operate constantly while the engine is in operation, connect brown power supply wire (9) to a power source that is energized only when the engine is in operation.
* If constant operation of the fuel boost pump is not needed, install an ON-OFF switch between the power source and brown power supply wire (9).

NOTE: This fuel boost pump is grounded internally, and must be switched on the power supply side.

* Use 16 gauge electrical wire for the power supply connection.

10. After installation of the fuel boost pump group is complete, turn on the fuel supply and connect the battery.

11. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks. Make repairs if necessary.
