The steering frame lock plates need to be replaced on certain 994D Wheel Loaders. The steering frame lock may fail if the machine is articulated with the lock link in "lock" position. If this occurs, the frame plate can come off, allowing the machine to articulate unexpectedly.AFFECTED PRODUCT

Safety - Replace the Steering Frame lock Plates
MODELS INVOLVED - 994D Wheel Loaders
Dear Caterpillar Product Owner:
The steering frame lock plates need to be replaced on certain 994D Wheel Loaders. The steering frame lock may fail if the machine is articulated with the lock link in "lock" position. If this occurs, the frame plate can come off, allowing the machine to articulate unexpectedly with potential for serious injury or death. New plates need to be installed on the products listed below. You will not be charged for the service performed.
Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service. Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated December 13, 2002 when scheduling this service.

Rework Procedure
Using the air-arc method, remove the two
8X0793 Plates from the rear frame group. Fill all voids in the frame and
grind the surface smooth and flush. See Illustration 1, for location and
welding information of the two new 2210008 Plates. The current 8X0790 Stow
Tray link (see Illustration 2) needs to be modified to the dimensions shown
in Illustration 3 below.
