The tees for the crankcase breathers are manufactured from rubber. In some applications, some of these tees are being damaged by the heat from the turbocharger exhaust housing. The damage may result in a leak from the tee. Illustration 1 shows a typical rubber tee in a fumes disposal group.

In some cases, the breathers can be moved to alternate locations that will increase the distance between the rubber tee and the turbocharger exhaust housing. This will reduce the heating of the rubber tee and this will prevent damage to the tee. If moving the crankcase breathers is not an option, a 210-2593 Shield As can be installed over the rubber tee. The shield assembly will prevent damage to the rubber tee from heat. The 210-2593 Shield As is now available through the Caterpillar parts system. This new shield assembly can be used to protect the rubber tees on any existing 3500 engine.

Use the following instructions in order to install the new shield assembly:

  1. Place the 210-2593 Shield As over the tee.

  1. Use two pieces of 5P-6025 Lockwire that are 305 mm (12 inches) long to secure the shield assembly in position.
