3512B Marine Auxiliary Engine Caterpillar

Black Start System

Usage:

3512 4DR
This generator set is able to function independently of any other systems. The 3512B is equipped with an air start motor. However, the electronic control module (ECM) and the electronic fuel injectors require 24 VDC to deliver fuel to the engine.

During an absence of electrical power from the ship, the Black Start System provides this power source. The Black Start System consists of the following components: a 24 VDC power source, 24 VDC lead batteries, a battery charging system, associated power source and interface and switching circuitry.

The components are in an enclosure that is mounted on the aft end port side of the generator set base. The monitored parameters of the Black Start System are displayed on the engine control panel that is mounted on the starboard side of the engine. The Black Start System receives 120 VAC from the ship's electrical system or from the generator's permanent magnetic alternator whenever the generator is operating. When the ship's electrical power is lost, the Black Start System provides the required operating power from the enclosed batteries.
