Pistons and Connecting Rods - Remove

Start By:

  1. Remove the cylinder head. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Cylinder Head - Remove".

  2. Remove the engine oil pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pump - Remove".


NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.


  1. Remove the carbon ridge from the top inside surface of the cylinder liner.

  2. Use Tooling (A) and turn the crankshaft until two pistons are at the bottom center.

  3. Remove bolts (1). Remove bearing caps (2). Push the connecting rods and pistons until the piston rings are out of the cylinder liners.

    Note: Be careful not to damage the cylinder liners and/or the crankshaft journals during the removal of the pistons and the connecting rods.

    Note: The connecting rods will have numbers on the side with the tab slot of the connecting rod. Numbers are also marked on the bearing caps. The piston and the connecting rod must be installed in the correctly numbered cylinder. Etch the cylinder number in the proper location on a connecting rod and bearing cap if a connecting rod and bearing cap is new.

  4. Remove the pistons and connecting rods from the cylinder liners.
