(5) Cylinder for fuel control linkage

Solenoid (2) is connected to cylinder (5) via an air hose. The cylinder has a rod that is attached to the fuel system linkage inside the engine. When the solenoid is activated, the solenoid enables pressurized air to activate the cylinder. The cylinder's rod moves the internal fuel system linkage to the fuel off position.

Solenoid (4) is connected to cylinder (6) via another air hose. When the solenoid is activated, the solenoid removes pressurized air from the cylinder. The cylinder's spring-loaded rod extends in order to move the fuel system linkage to the fuel off position.

Both of the solenoids can be manually activated with push buttons (1) and (3). Both of the solenoids are activated if an engine overspeed occurs or if the emergency stop button is pressed.

Emergency Stop

Typical emergency stop button

The engine's control panel has an emergency stop button. The emergency stop button is in the OUT position for normal engine operation. For an emergency stop, press the emergency stop button. The button will lock in place. The engine will not start when the button is locked. To reset the button, turn the button clockwise or pull the button. The spring-loaded button will return to the OUT position.

Use of the emergency stop button activates the fuel shutoffs.

Note: Some marine engines are equipped with an emergency stop button that must be pulled in order to stop the engine. The vessel may have remote emergency stop buttons.
