Type K thermocouples are installed in the main bearing caps in order to monitor the temperature of the main bearings. Excessive heat will generate an alarm and/or a shutdown.
In addition to the temperature, the control system monitors the rate of the rise in temperature. If this rate exceeds an increase of 2 °C (3.6 °F) within three seconds, an alarm is generated.
