Front Idler - Disassemble

Usage:

Disassembly Procedure

Start By:

  1. Remove the front idler, the recoil spring, and the hydraulic track adjuster as a unit. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Front Idler, Recoil Spring and Hydraulic Track Adjuster - Remove and Install" in this manual.

  1. Thoroughly clean the outside of the front idler prior to disassembly.


    NOTICE

    Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

    Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

    Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Remove the fill/drain plug from the front idler. Drain the oil from the idler into a suitable container for disposal. The capacity of the idler is 260 ± 15 mL (8.84 ± 0.51 oz).

  1. Place the front idler on the idler's side, as shown. The weight of the front idler is 132 kg (291 lb).

  1. Remove two spring pins (1) from bearings (2) .

  1. Fasten a hoist to two bearings (2). Remove the bearings from the shaft of the front idler. The weight of each bearing is 18 kg (40 lb).

  1. Remove Duo-cone seals (3) from bearings (2) .

  1. Remove shaft (5) from the front idler.

  1. Remove two O-ring seals (4) from shaft (5) .

  1. Remove Duo-cone seal (6) from each side of the front idler.

  1. Remove bushings (7) from each side of the idler.
