Introduction

This Special Instruction provides the location and procedure to install pin group for machines listed above.

Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read the information and you understand the information.

Safety Section

Work safely. Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs.

A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person must also have the necessary training, skills, and tools to perform these functions properly.

Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons. Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance of a potential hazard.

Therefore, the warnings in this publication and the warnings that are on the product are not all inclusive. Avoid using a tool, a procedure, a work method, or operating technique that is not recommended by Caterpillar.

Ensure that the product will not be damaged or the product will be made unsafe by the operation, lubrication, maintenance, or the repair procedures.

------ WARNING! ------

Do not operate or work on this machine unless you have read and understand the instructions and warnings in the Operation and Maintenance Manuals. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Contact your Cat dealer for replacement manuals. Proper care is your responsibility.

------ WARNING! ------

Accidental machine starting can cause injury or death to personnel working on the machine.

To avoid accidental machine starting, turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position and remove the key. If the machine is not equipped with a battery disconnect switch, disconnect the battery cables from the battery and tape the battery clamps.

Place a do not operate tag at the battery disconnect switch location to inform personnel that the machine is being worked on.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.

Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.

Prevent possible injury by performing the procedure that follows before working on the machine.

Move the machine to a smooth horizontal location. Move away from working machines and personnel and lower the implement to the ground.

Permit only one operator on the machine. Keep all other personnel away from machine or in view of the operator.

Engage the parking brake. Stop the engine.

Move the hydraulic control levers to all positions to release the pressure in the hydraulic system.

  • Attachment pin groups for boom mounted shears come with the following: A pin assembly (S), retention hardware (T) for the stick cylinder pin (PT5). Bearings (P), Seals (N), shims (M) for the boom pin (PT4).

  • The group may also come with press-in inserts (R), bushings (V), and/or shims (U) for the bracket to modify the pin bore and spacing for boom pin (PT4) and stick cylinder pin (PT5).

  • The group will not include the boom pin assembly.

(N) Seal
(P) Bearing
(R) Press-in insert
(W) Shoulder

  1. Cool the bearings (P) and press-in inserts (R) to a minimum of −73° C (−100° F).

  2. Clean the boom pin bore.

  3. Use proper hand protection and tooling 1P-0520 to install press-in insert (R) into the boom bore. The boom bore insert will bottom out onto a step within the mounting bracket tube. Note that the shoulder (W) goes to the inside as shown in Illustration 7.

  4. Use proper hand protection and tooling 1P-0520 to install bearing (P) into the boom bore. The bearing will bottom out onto a shoulder (W) within the mounting bracket tube. Bearing orientation is symmetric.

  5. Lightly grease the lip of seal (N) and use tooling 1P-0520 to install into the boom bore. The seal will bottom out onto the bearing, it should not extend past the face of the bracket. Note that the seal lip should face outside as shown in Illustration 7.

  6. Repeat Step 1 to Step 5 to install the parts into the other side of the mount.

  7. Shims (M) are loose-fit components that should be installed while pinning to the machine, refer to Shear Operation and Maintenance Manual , ""Installation of the Shear on the Hydraulic Excavator"". Grease the pin before installation. Use the boom pin supplied with the hydraulic excavator.

  2. Use proper hand protection and tooling 1P-0520 to install bushings (V) into the stick cylinder bore. The stick cylinder bore bushing should be pressed flush to the inside surface of the mounting bracket as shown in Illustration 8.

  3. Shims (U) are loose-fit components that should be installed while pinning to the machine, refer to Shear Operation and Maintenance Manual , ""Installation of the Shear on the Hydraulic Excavator"". Grease the pin (S) before installation. Use the stick cylinder pin supplied with the group.

  4. Retain the pin assembly (S) with retention hardware (T) supplied with the group.

Attachment pin groups for stick mounted shears come with the following.

  • Pin assembly (X) and retention hardware (Y) for the stick pin (PT8) and power link pin (PT10).

  • Bolt-on bushing (Z), hardware (AA), and shims (AB) for the bracket to modify both pin bore and spacing for PT8 and PT10.

Installation Procedure for Stick Mounted Shears

Illustration 12g06159831

  1. Apply red Loctite 263 to the bolts of hardware (AA). Bolt bushings (Z) into the bore of the mounting bracket with the bolts entering from inside. Torque the bolts to 240 ± 40 N·m (177 ± 30 lb ft). Make sure the bushings are located properly. The power link pin and bushings (PT10) may be smaller than the stick pin and bushings (PT8). The bracket should be oriented with the pin retention hardware on the operator’s side of the linkage.

  2. Shims (AB) are loose-fit components that should be installed while pinning to the machine, refer to Shear Operation and Maintenance Manual , ""Installation of the Shear on the Hydraulic Excavator"". Grease the pin (X) before installation. Use the pins supplied with the group.

  3. Retain the pin assembly (X) with retention hardware (Y) supplied with the group.
