Automatic mode key

Place the module in AUTO by pressing the Automatic mode key. The module will monitor the programmable inputs for a remote start signal.

Table 1
Operation     Detail
The display will briefly indicate:     AUTO MODE
The display will then indicate:     GENERATOR AT REST

If the remote start signal is detected, the module will begin the start delay timer.

Table 2
Operation     Detail
The module will begin the start delay timer. The start delay timer is used in order to ensure that the start is required and that the start is not a momentary transient signal.     START DELAY
00:09

The start delay timer expires after 5 seconds. Then, the module will continue with the normal start sequence. The normal start sequence is detailed below. If the remote start signal is removed during either the start delay timer or the preheat timer, the module will terminate the start sequence. The module will return to the standby AUTO state until another remote start signal is issued.

Table 3
Operation     Detail
If the preheat output is configured, the preheat timer is initiated. The programmable output that is selected is energized.     PRE-HEATING
00:09
After the preheat timer expires, the module will de-energize the preheat output. The module begins to start the engine. The following sequence occurs:     PRE-HEATING
00:00
The fuel solenoid is energized. Then after a 1 second delay, the starting motor is engaged.     FUEL ON
The engine is cranked for the duration of the cranking timer (10 seconds).     CRANKING attempt.1
00:06

When the engine starts, the starting motor is disengaged. The starting motor is disconnected from the alternator when the output reaches a frequency of 21 Hz. If an engine speed sensor is mounted on the flywheel housing, the engine speed sensor will be used for terminating cranking. Also, the engine speed sensor will be used for the alternator voltage and the oil pressure. If an engine speed sensor is utilized, it is possible to configure the module in another way. This configuration de-energizes the starter relay if the starting motor fails to engage on the first attempt. Then, another attempt to engage will be made. Refer to the "P810 For Windows" software manual for more information on this function.

Table 4
Operation     Detail
The duration of the cranking timer is 10 seconds. If the engine does not start on the first attempt, the module will rest the starter for the duration of the crank rest timer(10 seconds).     CRANK REST. 1
00:04
The crank rest timer expires after 10 seconds. Then, the module will attempt to start the engine.     CRANKING attempt.2
00:07

This will be repeated until either the engine starts or 3 attempts to start have been completed.

Table 5
Operation     Detail
If the engine does not start after 3 attempts, a fail to start alarm will occur.     SHUTDOWN
FAIL TO START

Stop/Reset key

Note: If a fail to start alarm occurs, the module must be placed into the STOP/RESET mode by pressing the Stop/Reset key. Determine the reason that the engine failed to start before making any further attempts to start the engine.

If the engine start is successful, the following sequence occurs:

Table 6
Operation     Detail
When the starting motor is disengaged, the safety on timer is activated.     WAITING FOR SAFETY
ON 00:09

This timer allows the following fault inputs to stabilize without triggering a fault: oil pressure, high engine temperature, underspeed, undervoltage, charge fail and programmable fault inputs that may be delayed. The safety on timer expires after 10 seconds. Then, the engine is running and full fault protection is made available.

Table 7
Operation     Detail
Once the engine is running at the correct speed and the generator is up to voltage, the warm up timer is then initiated.     WARMING UP
00:08

If the remote start signal is removed during the cranking timer or the warm up timer, the module will terminate the normal auto start sequence. The cooling timer is initiated. Then, the module will return to the standby AUTO state until a start is signalled again.

Table 8
Operation     Detail
After the warm up timer expires, the module will energize the load transfer output.     GENERATOR AVAILABLE

The engine is now running. The generator is selected in order to supply the load.

Table 9
Operation     Detail
If the remote start signal is removed, the module will initiate a return timer for 30 seconds. The return timer ensures that it is safe to stop the generator.     GENERATOR AVAILABLE
00:06

If the remote start terminal becomes active within the 30 second delay, the module will continue to run the generator on load. The module will ignore any fluctuating remote start signal until the remote start signal remains inactive for the duration of the stop delay timer. The return timer expires after 30 seconds. Then, the module will de-energize the load transfer output.

Table 10
Operation     Detail
The module will begin the cooling timer. The cooling timer allows the engine to run off load in order to ensure that the engine has adequately cooled before the engine is brought to rest.     COOLING DOWN
2:34
The cooling timer expires after 30 seconds. Then, the module will de-energize the fuel solenoid and the engine is brought to rest.     STOPPING
00:27
The fail to stop timer expires after 30 seconds. If the engine is running, an alarm will occur.     SHUTDOWN
FAIL TO STOP
If the engine stops during the fail to stop timer, the screen displays the following message:     GENERATOR AT REST

Note: It is possible that the module has been configured to automatically perform regular exercise runs. Exercise runs are used for engines that are in standby applications. Exercise runs are also used for engines that are in peak shaving applications. If the remote start terminal is not active, it is possible that a scheduled run may occur. If the system is in the AUTO mode, the engine may start unexpectedly. The engine may start if a run is scheduled.

------ WARNING! ------

The high voltage that is produced by an operating generator set can cause severe injury or death. Before performing any maintenance or repairs, ensure that the generator will not start.

Place the engine control switch in the "OFF" position. Attach "DO NOT OPERATE" tags to all starting controls. Disconnect the batteries or disable the starting system. Lock out all switchgear and automatic transfer switches that are associated with the generator.
