单个凸轮轴 (1) 由前齿轮系驱动。 对于 8 缸发动机，发动机缸体中有五个轴承支撑凸轮轴。 对于 12 缸发动机，发动机缸体中有七个轴承支撑凸轮轴。 凸轮轴旋转时，凸轮轴凸轮促动各气缸的两个排气门或两个进气门。 必须通过前齿轮系将凸轮轴齿轮 (2) 和曲轴齿轮一起正时。 凸轮轴凸轮与曲轴位置的关系导致各气缸中的气门正确正时，以便正确操作发动机。
