Turbocharger - Remove

Removal Procedure


NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Remove turbocharger cover (1) from the turbocharger.

    Note: The turbocharger cover is constructed of fiberglass. Wear a mask when the turbocharger cover is removed.

  1. Remove hose (2) that connects the air cleaner to the turbocharger.

  1. Remove hose (4) that connects the air cleaner to the crankcase breather.

  1. Remove support bracket (5) from the air cleaner.

  1. Remove air cleaner (3) from the turbocharger.

  1. Remove the exhaust elbow from the turbocharger. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Exhaust Elbow - Remove and Install".

  1. If equipped, remove the hose clamp which fastens the compressor outlet to air inlet hose (6) of the aftercooler.

  1. Remove the bolts from flange (7) of oil supply line (8) .

  1. Remove pipe connection (9) from union (10). Use a wrench to hold union (10) while pipe connection (9) is removed.

  1. Remove the bolts from flanges (12) of oil drain line (11). Remove the oil drain line from the turbocharger.

    The 3056 marine engine is shown.

  1. Remove the four nuts from studs (14) that hold turbocharger (13) onto inlet and exhaust manifold (15). Remove the turbocharger from the inlet and exhaust manifold.
