Armature End Play - Adjust
Use the procedure that follows in order to check the end play and adjust the end play.
- Remove the rear center cover from the starting motor.

- Remove the C washer (1) and remove all shims (2) .
- Put the starting motor in a vise. Put the Dial Indicator Group (3) on the vise near the end of the starting motor. The stylus should contact the end of the armature (4), as shown.

- Force the armature completely toward the drive housing. Adjust the dial indicator to "0".
- Force the armature in the opposite direction to check the armature end play.
- The allowable end play is 0.05 to 0.40 mm (0.002 to 0.016 inch). Install adequate shims (2) behind the C washer in order to give the correct amount of end play. The shims are contained within the Armature Kit. The kit contains three 0.5 mm (0.02 inch) shims. Also, the kit contains three 0.2 mm (0.008 inch) shims.
- Install the center cover. Put Thread Lock Compound on the threads of the two cover screws. Tighten the screws to a torque of 3.2 to 4.0 N·m (28 to 35 lb in).
