保养水平对发动机的使用寿命至关重要。 其它影响使用寿命的主要因素是运行速度和负荷。
以下状况可以指示恶劣作业：
- 使用在超过36,320 kg (80,000 lb)车辆总重(GVW)的车辆上使用和其它高负荷系数作业(比如非公路应用)
- 频繁在超过1525 m (5000 ft)的高海拔地区使用
- 长期低怠速下运行
- 使用在北极条件下(正常寒冷天气起动始于温度低于−18 °C (0 °F)时)
- 保养周期延长，超出推荐的保养周期
- 频繁热态停机(高负荷系数运行后最少5分钟的冷却时间)
- 使用未经卡特彼勒在其燃油规格中推荐的燃油
- 可能导致燃油润滑性能减弱的极端环境温度条件
- 燃油滤清器的频繁堵塞
- 延长的燃油系统保养周期
- 燃油储油箱缺乏保养(水分和沉淀物过多，微生物生长过度等)
