Note: For machines that are equipped with Medium Pressure Hydraulics only, the wiring connections for the Medium Pressure Port A and Port B Solenoids are different than on the machines that are equipped with the Medium Pressure System AND the 2nd High Pressure Hydraulic System (Auxiliary Hydraulics 2). Refer to the appropriate connection diagram above for your machine configuration. Refer to the full machine Electrical System Schematic for complete harness connections for the circuits.

This diagnostic code is associated with the Medium Pressure Port A Solenoid (attachment). The FMI 06 means that the Machine Control ECM has determined that the circuit current for the solenoid is above normal.

The Medium Pressure Port A Solenoid is a proportional solenoid that is controlled by a Machine Control ECM PWM driver output. In order to control the solenoid, the ECM will change the current of the PWM output signal for the solenoid.

Conditions that can cause this diagnostic code are listed:

  • The energize circuit of the solenoid is shorted to a ground source.

  • The solenoid has failed.

  • The Medium Pressure/2nd High Pressure Switch has failed. (Med and 2nd High Press equipped machines)

  • The ECM has failed. This is unlikely.

Before performing this procedure, inspect the harness connectors that are involved in the circuit. Poor connections can often be the cause of a problem in an electrical circuit. Verify that all connections in the circuit are clean, secure and in good condition. If a problem with a connection is found, correct the problem and verify that this diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure.

Note: The following procedure includes some test steps that may apply only to machines that have the medium pressure attachment only OR to machines that have the medium pressure and 2nd high pressure attachment installed. These steps are labeled as: (Med Press only) or (Med and 2nd High Press). Conduct the checks according to the correct connection diagram for your machine configuration that is indicated above.

Test Step 1. CHECK THE SOLENOID

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key switch to the ON position. Do not start the engine.

  1. (Med and 2nd High Press). Ensure that the 2nd High Pressure/Medium Pressure Switch is in the Medium Pressure position.

  1. Observe the status of the diagnostic code.

  1. Disconnect the solenoid with the active diagnostic code from the machine harness.

Expected Result:

The active FMI 06 diagnostic code changes to a FMI 05 diagnostic code when the solenoid is disconnected.

Results:

  • YES - The active FMI 06 diagnostic code changes to a FMI 05 diagnostic code when the solenoid is disconnected. The circuit is correct.

    Repair: The solenoid has failed. Repeat this test "CHECK THE SOLENOID" in order to verify the solenoid failure. Replace the solenoid.

    STOP

  • NO - FMI 06 diagnostic code remains active. Disconnecting the solenoid did not affect the status of the diagnostic code. Proceed to Test Step 2.

Test Step 2. CHECK THE ENERGIZE CIRCUIT OF THE SOLENOID FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

The solenoid remains disconnected from the machine harness.

  1. Turn the key switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.

  1. (Med and 2nd High Press) Ensure that the 2nd High Pressure/Medium Pressure Switch is in the Medium Pressure position.

  1. Disconnect the machine harness connectors J1 and J2 from the Machine Control ECM and the Implement ECM 2.

  1. At the machine harness connector J1 for the Machine Control ECM, measure the resistance from contact J1-67 (wire P942-YL) to frame ground. Measure the resistance to all of the J1 and J2 contacts that are used on the Machine Control ECM connectors.

  1. At the machine harness connector J1 for the Machine Control ECM, measure the resistance from contact J1-67 (wire P942-YL) to all of the J1 and J2 contacts that are used on the Implement ECM 2 connectors.

Expected Result:

Each resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms.

Results:

  • OK - Each resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms. The solenoid circuit is not shorted in the machine harness. Proceed to Test Step 4.

  • NOT OK (Med Press only) - One or more of the resistance measurements is less than 5000 ohms. There is a short in the machine harness.

    Repair: The short is between wire P942-YL and the circuit with the low resistance measurement.Refer to the complete machine Electrical System Schematic. Examine all of the connectors in circuits for points in the machine harness where the circuits could be shorted. For information on testing for short circuits and finding short circuits, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Wiring Harness (Short Circuit) - Test". Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

    STOP

  • NOT OK (Med and 2nd High Press). - One or more of the resistance measurements is less than 5000 ohms. There is a short in either the switch or the solenoid circuit. Proceed to Test Step 3 in order to isolate the short in the circuit.

Test Step 3. CHECK THE HARNESS AND THE SWITCH (MED AND 2ND HIGH PRESS)

This test step is for machines that are equipped with the medium pressure and 2nd high pressure attachment.

The solenoid remains disconnected from the machine harness. The machine harness connectors remain disconnected from the Machine Control ECM and the Implement ECM 2

  1. At the 2nd High Pressure/Medium Pressure Switch, disconnect the solenoid supply wire P942-YL from switch contact 5. Disconnect the solenoid supply wire P708-YL from switch contact 4.

  1. Connect a jumper wire between the disconnected solenoid supply wire P942-YL and the disconnected solenoid supply wire P708-YL.

  1. At the machine harness connector J1 for the Machine Control ECM, measure the resistance from contact J1-67 (wire P942-YL) to frame ground. Measure the resistance from contact J1-67 (wire P942-YL) all of the J1 and J2 contacts that are used on the Machine Control ECM connectors and on the Implement ECM 2 connectors.

Expected Result:

Each resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms.

Results:

  • YES - Each resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms. The switch is grounded internally.

    Repair: Repeat this Test Step in order to verify the switch failure.If the 2nd High Pressure/Medium Pressure Switch has failed, replace the switch. Verify that the new switch corrects the problem.

    STOP

  • NOT OK - One or more of the resistance measurements is less than 5000 ohms. There is a short in the machine harness.

    Repair: The short is between wire P942-YL or wire P708-YL and the circuit that has a low resistance measurement. Check each wire individually in order to determine which wire is shorted to the circuit with the low resistance measurement.Refer to the complete machine Electrical System Schematic. Examine all of the connectors in the circuits for points in the machine harness where a short circuit could occur. For information on testing for short circuits and finding short circuits, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Wiring Harness (Short Circuit) - Test". Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

    STOP

Test Step 4. CHECK THE STATUS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE

  1. Inspect the harness connectors and clean the contacts of the harness connectors and check the wires for damage to the insulation that is caused by excessive heat, battery acid, or chafing.

  1. Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires that are associated with the sensor circuit.

  1. Reconnect all harness connectors. Make sure that the connectors are fully seated and the clips for each connector are completely fastened.

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

  1. Operate the machine.

  1. Check the status of the CID 2185 FMI 06 diagnostic code.

Expected Result:

The CID 2185 FMI 06 diagnostic code is still active.

Results:

  • YES - The CID 2185 FMI 06diagnostic code is still active. The diagnostic code has not been corrected.

    Repair: Check the circuit again. Use the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) service tool, if available, in order to perform a "Wiggle Test" on the machine wiring harness. The wiggle test can detect momentary or intermittent shorts or opens in the machine wiring harness.If the diagnostic code remains active or if the diagnostic code is repeatedly activated and no cause can be found, flash the ECM with the latest version of software. Ensure that you have the latest version of software for your specific machine and ECM. Refer to the Testing And Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program" section of this manual for the correct procedure.If the problem is still present after flashing the latest software to your ECM, contact the dealership's Technical Communicator in order to consult with the Caterpillar Dealer Solutions Network.

    STOP

  • NO - The CID 2185 FMI 06 is not active. The diagnostic code does not exist at this time.

    Repair: The initial diagnostic code was probably caused by a poor electrical connection or a short at one of the harness connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal machine operation.

    STOP
