If a 190-02 "Loss of Engine RPM Signal" diagnostic code occurs on a 3406E ADEM II Engine, the servicing dealer needs to ensure that the personality module software (Flash File) is the most recent software that is available for that particular rating. The latest software for 3406E ADEM II Engines has been written in order to account for torsional vibrations in the engine gear train.
Logged 190-02 diagnostic codes can be generated on engines with older software due to torsional vibrations in the timing gears. Before replacing the engine speed/timing sensor on a 3406E ADEM II Engine, the servicing dealer should ensure that the engine control module (ECM) contains the latest software. Checking the software part number can easily be performed during Step 2 of Troubleshooting, "Engine Speed/Timing Circuit Test".
The latest software part numbers for 3406E ADEM II Engines are listed in the FIND System and the SIS Web. If this check verifies that the engine software has been cancelled and replaced, reflash the engine with the latest software. Reflashing may prevent the unnecessary replacement of a good engine speed/timing sensor.
Note: The serial number prefixes that are referenced in the top of this article are the only engines that are affected by this software update.
