Defect in Core of Engine Oil Cooler
Inspect the engine oil cooler. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "3406C Truck Engine" for details. Repair the oil cooler or replace the oil cooler, as required.
Failure of the Cylinder Head Gasket
Check the cylinder head gasket. Start the engine and remove the radiator cap. Look for air bubbles in the coolant. Air bubbles are an indication of a faulty cylinder head gasket. Remove the cylinder head and inspect the cylinder head for cracks. Look for cracks in the cylinder liners. Also inspect the cylinder head spacer plate and the surface of the cylinder block for flatness and cracks. Replace the cylinder head gasket before reassembly. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "3406C Truck Engine" and the Specifications module for the proper bolt tightening sequence.
