Fuel System - Prime

Usage:

3024 3TW

------ WARNING! ------

Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire. To help prevent possible injury, turn the start switch off when changing fuel filters or water separator elements. Clean up fuel spills immediately.

----------------------

NOTICE

Use a suitable container to catch any fuel that might spill. Clean up any spilled fuel immediately.

NOTICE

Do not allow dirt to enter the fuel system. Thoroughly clean the area around a fuel system component that will be disconnected. Fit a suitable cover over disconnected fuel system component.

Fuel transfer pump

(A) Fuel flow from the primary fuel filter

(B) Fuel flow to the fuel injection pump

(1) Priming lever

Use the following procedures in order to remove air from the fuel system:

  1. Loosen the nuts on the fuel lines for the fuel injection nozzles.

  1. The priming lever operates by moving the lever up and down. Operate priming lever (1) of the fuel transfer pump until fuel that is free from air flows from the fuel injection nozzles. Then, tighten the nuts on the fuel lines for the fuel injection nozzles. Refer to Specifications, "Fuel Injection Lines" for the correct torque.

Note: If the drive cam of the fuel transfer pump is in the position of maximum cam lift, the priming lever will not operate. The crankshaft must be rotated one revolution.

    (2) Primary fuel filter

    (3) Water separator

  1. Use the following procedure in order to remove the air in the primary fuel filter (2) and the water separator (3) (if equipped).

    1. Remove the caps from the tops of the fuel filter bases.

    1. Fill the fuel filter bases with diesel fuel.

    1. Reinstall the caps on the fuel filter bases.

Note: Do not allow dirt to enter the fuel filter bases while the caps are removed.

    (4) Vent screw

    (5) Fuel injection pump

  1. Loosen vent screw (4) on fuel injection pump (5). Operate priming lever (1) on the fuel transfer pump until fuel that is free from air flows from the vent screw. Tighten the vent screw to a torque of 6 ± 1 N·m (53 ± 9 lb in).

  1. Start the engine. If the engine runs properly for a period of time and then the engine stops or the engine runs rough, check all of the fuel lines and the components for leaks. The air probably enters the fuel system in the low pressure side of the fuel system.
