SUBJECT: PRIMER AND/OR PAINT ON THE FINISHED SURFACE OF CYLINDER RODS FOR SOME WORK TOOLS

PROBLEM:

Reports are being received of layers of primer and/or paint on the finished surface of cylinder rods for some work tools. Paint of any kind on the finished surface of cylinder rods is unacceptable and must be removed before operation/continued operation of the work tool.

Primer and/or paint on the finished surface of cylinders rods result in the degradation and eventual failure of the seals on the cylinder head. In addition to causing hydraulic system leaks and reduced performance, failure of the cylinder head seals allow the entrainment of air and dirt into the hydraulic system, thus contaminating the hydraulic system on both the work tool and the host machine.

SOLUTION:

Inspect the work tool for primer and/or paint on the finished surface of cylinder rods. If paint if found, use an approved paint remover or solvent to remove any primer and/or paint from the finished surface of cylinder rods. Do not use a grinding wheel, emery cloth, sand paper or any other material that may scratch or pit the finished surface of the cylinder rod.

After removal of the paint from the cylinder rod, inspect the seals and replace the seals, as necessary. Also, check the hydraulic oil and the filter for contaminants and replace them, as necessary.

When painting cylinders and other work tool components, mask the exposed finished surfaces of cylinder rods to prevent the application of primer and/or paint.

For additional information on the maintenance and care of cylinder rods, contact BCP Work Tools Product Support.
