Problem

The 384-5134 Glands were produced with a u-cup seal groove of 19.84 ± 0.10 mm (0.781 ± 0.004 inch) or 23.84 ± 0.10 mm (0.939 ± 0.004 inch).

Solution

Caterpillar is aware of this problem, and recommends the below action when a front suspension group is being rebuilt and the 384-5134 Gland is used.

1. Measure the u-cup seal groove on the 384-5134 Gland (1).

2. If the groove dimension is 23.84 ± 0.10 mm (0.939 ± 0.004 inch), 459-7518 Backup Ring (2) is required.

3. If the groove dimension is 19.84 ± 0.10 mm (0.781 ± 0.004 inch), no backup ring is required.
