(1) Cylinder head studs

Install the cylinder head studs with the following procedure:

  1. Coat the lower half of each stud with 1.5 mm (.06 inch) thick coating of 4C-4774 Water and Temperature Resistant Grease .

  1. Thoroughly clean the top of the cylinder block.

  1. Install the cylinder head studs.

    Tighten the cylinder head studs to the following torque. ... 100 ± 20 N·m (75 ± 15 lb ft)

  1. Apply a bead of sealant at the top. This will ensure that the counterbore is filled with grease.

  1. Coat the upper half of each stud with 1.5 mm (.06 inch) thick coating of 4C-4774 Water and Temperature Resistant Grease .

(9) Procedure for tightening the main bearings

  1. Torque the studs in the cylinder block.

  1. Assemble the main bearing caps. Make sure that the part number faces toward the front of the cylinder block.

  1. Apply clean engine oil to the threads of the studs and to both sides of the washers. Assemble the washers and nuts onto the studs. Hand tighten nuts.

  1. Apply clean engine oil to the threads of all of the side bolts (10), (11), (12), and (13) and to both sides of all of the washers. Assemble the washers and side bolts onto the cylinder block. Hand tighten the side bolts.

  1. Start at the front face of the block.

    Tighten the side bolts (10) to the following torque. ... 215 ± 40 N·m (160 ± 30 lb ft)

    Tighten the side bolts (11) to the following torque. ... 215 ± 40 N·m (160 ± 30 lb ft)

  1. Start at the front face of the block. Use the 156-7165 Stud Tensioner Tool Group in order to apply tension to the studs.

    Apply tension to each pair of studs at the same time to the following pressure. ... 125000 ± 2500 kPa (18130 ± 363 psi)

  1. Hand tighten the nuts. Release the pressure on the studs.

Tighten the side bolts according to the following procedure.

  1. Start at the front face of the block.
