      NOTICE

Failure to follow the recommended procedure or the specified tooling that is required for the procedure could result in damage to components.

To avoid component damage, follow the recommended procedure using the recommended tools.

      NOTICE

Do not use an impact wrench to tighten or loosen the bolts on the bearing preload adjuster. The vibration of an impact tool can damage the digital indicators and/or cause incorrect indicator readings. Always use hand tools to tighten or loosen the bolts on the bearing preload adjuster.

    2. Use a suitable lifting device to position the preload adjuster onto the base plate. The weight of the preload adjuster is approximately 150 kg (330 lb). The weight of the base plate is approximately 191 kg (420 lb).

    3. Lubricate the threads of the bolts. Install the bolts and tighten to a torque of 339 N·m (250 lb ft) in a diagonal pattern by one quarter turn at a time.

      Illustration 10g02142422

    4. Set the dial indicators to read zero.

      Illustration 11g02142423

    5. Loosen the bolts by one quarter turn at a time in a diagonal pattern. Loosen the bolts until all the bolts are no longer threaded into the base plate.

    6. Clean the threads that are in the spindle. Use a suitable lifting device to install the preload adjuster onto the spindle. The weight of the preload adjuster is approximately 150 kg (330 lb).

    7. Install the bolts. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 339 N·m (250 lb ft) in a diagonal pattern by one quarter turn at a time.

    8. Use Tooling (H) to release the parking brake. Do not exceed 4150 kPa (602 psi).

    9. Rotate the wheel by a minimum of three revolutions.

    10. Record the measurement from each of the dial indicators and average the measurements. Record the average measurement as Dimension (X).

    11. Remove Tooling (H).

Note: Relieve the pressure in the parking brake before Tooling (H) is removed. Failure to relieve the pressure could result in injury or death to personnel in the area

      Illustration 12g02142426

    12. Loosen the bolts by one quarter turn at a time in a diagonal pattern. Remove the bolts. Use a suitable lifting device to remove the preload adjuster. The weight of the preload adjuster is approximately 150 kg (330 lb).

      Illustration 13g03831892

    13. Install a number of shims (14) that is equal to Dimension (X). Install retainer (13). Apply Tooling (E) onto bolts (12). Install bolts (12). Tighten bolts (12) to a torque of 530 ± 70 N·m (391 ± 52 lb ft).

  10. "Bearing Preload Procedure - Alternate Method"

      Illustration 14g03831941

    1. Install retainer (13). Install seven of bolts (12), equally spaced.

Note: Do not install the shims at this time.

    2. Use Tooling (H) to release the parking brake. Do not exceed 4150 kPa (602 psi).

    3. Tighten bolts (12) to a torque of 50 N·m (37 lb ft) in a cross pattern while rotating the wheel at least three revolutions. Loosen bolts (12). Rotate the wheel three revolutions. The opposite bolts are to be tightened as retightening progresses around the bolts circle, and all bolts must stabilize at the specified torque. Retighten bolts (12) to a torque of 20 N·m (15 lb ft) while rotating the wheel, and then tighten bolts (12) to a torque of 30 ± 5 N·m (22 ± 4 lb ft) while rotating the wheel.

      Illustration 16g03831957

    4. Use Tooling (J) to measure the distance from the top of the retainer (13) to the end of the spindle at two locations. Average the two measurements and record the result as Dimension (A).

    5. Remove Tooling (H).

Note: Relieve the pressure in the parking brake before Tooling (H) is removed. Failure to relieve the pressure could result in injury or death to personnel in the area

    6. Remove bolts (12) and retainer (13).

    7. Use Tooling (K) to measure the thickness of retainer (13) at three locations. Average the three measurements. Record the result as Dimension (B). Subtract Dimension (B) from Dimension (A). Record the result as Dimension (C).

      Illustration 17g03831892

    8. Install a number of shims (14) that is equal to Dimension (C) minus 0.07 ± 0.03 mm (0.003 ± 0.0012 inch). Install retainer (13). Apply Tooling (E) onto bolts (12). Install bolts (12). Tighten bolts (12) to a torque of 530 ± 70 N·m (391 ± 52 lb ft).

    Illustration 19g03831885

  11. Route harness assembly (11) through the spindle to the retainer plate. Extend harness assembly (11) through the retainer plate with enough length to connect speed sensor assembly (9).

  12. Pull harness assembly slack through the spindle. Locate harness assembly (11) in grommet assembly (10) using green tape that is present on the harness assembly. Check that speed sensor assembly (9) is seated before tightening grommet assembly (10). Tightening grommet assembly (10) to a torque of 90 + 9 / - 0 N·m (66 + 7 / - 0 lb ft).

    Illustration 20g03831879

    NOTICE

Do not install the bolts that secure the speed sensor unless the grommet assembly has been tightened first. Damage to the harness can occur.

  13. Position speed sensor assembly (9) and install bolts (8). Tighten bolts (8) to a torque of 12 ± 3 N·m (106 ± 27 lb in).
