Illustration 8 g01968130 Show/hide tableIllustration 9 g02142419 Show/hide tableNOTICE Failure to follow the recommended procedure or the specified tooling that is required for the procedure could result in damage to components.
To avoid component damage, follow the recommended procedure using the recommended tools.
Show/hide tableNOTICE Do not use an impact wrench to tighten or loosen the bolts on the bearing preload adjuster. The vibration of an impact tool can damage the digital indicators and/or cause incorrect indicator readings. Always use hand tools to tighten or loosen the bolts on the bearing preload adjuster.
- Use a suitable lifting device to position the preload adjuster onto the base plate. The weight of the preload adjuster is approximately
150 kg (330 lb) . The weight of the base plate is approximately191 kg (420 lb) . - Lubricate the threads of the bolts. Install the bolts and tighten to a torque of
339 N·m (250 lb ft) in a diagonal pattern by one quarter turn at a time.Show/hide tableIllustration 10 g02142422 - Set the dial indicators to read zero.

Illustration 11 g02142423 - Loosen the bolts by one quarter turn at a time in a diagonal pattern. Loosen the bolts until all the bolts are no longer threaded into the base plate.
- Clean the threads that are in the spindle. Use a suitable lifting device to install the preload adjuster onto the spindle. The weight of the preload adjuster is approximately
150 kg (330 lb) . - Install the bolts. Tighten the bolts to a torque of
339 N·m (250 lb ft) in a diagonal pattern by one quarter turn at a time. - Use Tooling (H) to release the parking brake. Do not exceed
4150 kPa (602 psi) . - Rotate the wheel by a minimum of three revolutions.
- Record the measurement from each of the dial indicators and average the measurements. Record the average measurement as Dimension (X).
- Remove Tooling (H).
Note: Relieve the pressure in the parking brake before Tooling (H) is removed. Failure to relieve the pressure could result in injury or death to personnel in the area

530 ± 70 N·m (391 ± 52 lb ft) .
- Use Tooling (G) to adjust the wheel bearing preload. Refer to Tool Operating Manual, NEHS0920, "Preload Procedure".
- "Bearing Preload Procedure - Alternate Method"
- Install retainer (13). Install seven of bolts (12), equally spaced.
Note: Do not install the shims at this time.
- Use Tooling (H) to release the parking brake. Do not exceed
4150 kPa (602 psi) . - Tighten bolts (12) to a torque of
50 N·m (37 lb ft) in a cross pattern while rotating the wheel at least three revolutions. Loosen bolts (12). Rotate the wheel three revolutions. The opposite bolts are to be tightened as retightening progresses around the bolts circle, and all bolts must stabilize at the specified torque. Retighten bolts (12) to a torque of20 N·m (15 lb ft) while rotating the wheel, and then tighten bolts (12) to a torque of30 ± 5 N·m (22 ± 4 lb ft) while rotating the wheel.Show/hide tableIllustration 15 g03831941 Show/hide tableIllustration 16 g03831957 - Use Tooling (J) to measure the distance from the top of the retainer (13) to the end of the spindle at two locations. Average the two measurements and record the result as Dimension (A).
- Remove Tooling (H).
Note: Relieve the pressure in the parking brake before Tooling (H) is removed. Failure to relieve the pressure could result in injury or death to personnel in the area
- Remove bolts (12) and retainer (13).
- Use Tooling (K) to measure the thickness of retainer (13) at three locations. Average the three measurements. Record the result as Dimension (B). Subtract Dimension (B) from Dimension (A). Record the result as Dimension (C).
