The camshaft to adjustable idler gear backlash may be incorrectly set during engine assembly on certain C18 Marine Engines. Operation may result in exceedingly high gear or speed sensor temperatures. Gear discoloring and/or camshaft speed sensor diagnostic code 342-8 may be present as a result. |

Before beginning the following rework, please review the safety actions in the Operation and Maintenance Manual. 1) Remove front mounted heat exchanger (if equipped). 2) Remove front mounted fuel filter assembly and bracket (if equipped). 3) Remove cam and adjustable idler gear access cover. 4) Perform Finding Top Center Position for No. 1 Piston. 5) Mark cam gear, adjustable idler gear and idler gear teeth to aid in reinstallation. 6) Remove adjustable idler gear. If necessary, rotate crankshaft in the opposite direction slightly to aid in removal. 7) Inspect for correct alignment of the adjustable idler gear stub shaft. The hole in the lower left side of the adjustable idler gear stub shaft is used for alignment during factory assembly. Image1 shows the location of this hole, an example of a correctly aligned hole and an incorrectly misaligned hole. 8) Insert a 9.53mm (3/8") diameter pin into this hole. A 213-3066 pin or the straight shank of a drill bit can be used provided the sharp portion is covered to protect from hand injury. Ensure the pin can be inserted into the hole 16mm (5/8") minimum. If the pin can be inserted 16mm (5/8") minimum, skip to step 14. 9) Remove camshaft speed sensor. Inspect the sensor for melting due to excessive temperature. Inspect the color of the teeth of the camshaft gear and adjustable idler gear. Refer to Image2 for gear teeth color examples. If the sensor and color of the teeth appear normal, skip to step 13. 10) Remove front housing and replace cam gear, adjustable idler gear, adjustable idler stub shaft, idler gear and idler stub shaft. 11) If gear teeth are missing, remove engine oil pan to wash metallic particles from pan. 12) Reinstall the front housing and oil pan (if required). Replace oil filters and fill with oil. 13) Time the front gear group and adjust cam gear backlash. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, RENR2388, "Gear Group (Front) - Time" 14) Reassemble engine using standard procedures. |
