Installation Of 7W6942, 7W7157 and 7W7158 Electric Service Meter Groups{7478} Caterpillar

Installation Of 7W6942, 7W7157 and 7W7158 Electric Service Meter Groups{7478}

Usage:

3500 Series Engines

The electric service meter groups above are a service replacement for the mechanical service meter installed on 3500 Series Engines, for any engine speed and for either direction of crankshaft rotation. The 7W6942 Service Meter Group is for installation on vehicle engines, or engines that do not have an instrument panel. The 7W7157 Service Meter Group is used to install the service meter in a gauge mounting hole in the instrument panel. The 7W7158 Service Meter Group is used to install the service meter when there are no available gauge mounting holes in the instrument panel.

The electric service meter is powered by a magnetic pickup installed in the flywheel housing, directly over the teeth of the flywheel ring gear.

Mechanical Service Meter Removal

Remove service meter (1). Install a 7N4076 Cover (2) with a 4M8303 Seal as a replacement for the service meter. Use the two original S1615 Bolts (3) with two 9S211 Clamps (4) to fasten cover (2) in position.

Installation Of Magnetic Pickup

(1) Remove plug (1) from the 5/8"-18 threaded hole at the upper right of flywheel housing (2).

(2) Some SAE number "0" (8N8302 or 1W5600) or number "00" (8N8301) Flywheel Housings have only two tapped holes for magnetic pickup installation, instead of the four found on later flywheel housings. If the two holes are already in use, a third hole, 14.75 Ø (0.58" Ø) must be drilled at either location (A) or (B), according to the part number and type of flywheel housing, using the dimensions shown in the above illustrations. Use a thread tap to put 5/8"-18 threads in hole (A) or (B).

NOTE: The electric hour meter can not share an electrical signal from a magnetic pickup, with any other electrical device.

IMPORTANT: Hole (A) or (B) must be directly over the flywheel gear teeth.

(3) Turn magnetic pickup (3) into the threaded hole until end (C) comes into contact with flywheel gear teeth (4), then loosen magnetic pickup (3) 1/2 ± 1/10 turn. This should give a clearance of 0.55 to 0.83 mm (.022" to .033") between end (C) of the magnetic pickup and gear teeth (4) [dimension (D)]. Tighten locknut (5).

Installation Of Electric Service Meter For Industrial Engines With Instrument Panel

(1) Normally, if the instrument panel has an empty gauge mounting hole (A), use a 4W0156 Instrument Mounting Group to install the electric service meter in the empty hole.

(2) If there is no mounting hole (A) available for installation of the service meter, it can be installed (mounted) on the top (B) of the instrument panel box.

(3) Use the bolt holes in a 6L2845 Bracket as a template to mark the location to drill two holes at location (B). Loosen the retaining bolts for the two gauges, (1) and (2), and move the gauges and any attached tubing or wires out of the way.

(4) Drill two 8.75 Ø (.344" Ø) holes at the locations marked in step 2. Use 2H3755 Bolts with 4B4277 Washers and 1D4716 Nuts to fasten the 6L2845 Bracket at location (B). Put gauges (1) and (2) back in their original position.

(5) Use the 4W0156 Instrument Mounting Group to install the electric service meter on the 6L2845 Bracket.

(6) For either installation given here, use the 4W1568 Wire Assembly to connect the service meter to the magnetic pickup.

Installation Of Electric Service Meter For Vehicle Engines In Equipment By Other Manufacturers Or For Engines Without An Instrument Panel

(1) Remove bolts (1) and (2) from left rear camshaft cover (3).

(2) Install 6T7337 Service Meter (4) on 1N3755 Bracket Assembly (5). Connect 4W3474 Wire Assembly (6) to service meter (4); then use S1590 Bolt (7) with a 9L9132 Washer and S1591 Bolt (8) with a 9L9132 Washer to fasten bracket assembly (5) as shown.

(3) Use 6V2686 Clip (9), under original bolt (10), to give support to wire assembly (6). Connect wire (6), from the service meter, to wire (11) from magnetic pickup. Install 9G9151 clip (12) to hold and protect the connection.
