Usage:
The 4W5391 Preregulator Box Assembly provides protection for 2301 Governor Controls against the following operational hazards:
Battery disconnect during operation - engine driven alternators and battery chargers produce damaging positive battery lead voltages if the battery becomes disconnected during operation. The 2301 governor control can be permanently damaged if battery lead voltage exceeds 40 Volts. The preregulator protects against voltage spikes by limiting supply voltage to 36 ± 2 Volts.
Nicad battery systems - charging rates on 32 Volt Nicad battery systems can exceed 40 Volts. This can cause permanent damage to the 2301 governor control. The preregulator limits supply voltage to 36 ± 2 Volts to prevent governor control failure.
Reverse voltage damage - incorrect wiring installation can cause reverse polarity voltage to the supply circuit thereby resulting in permanent damage to the governor control. The preregulator protects the governor control against these reverse voltages.
Wiring shorts - incorrect wiring installation can also cause actuator lead shorts. Lead wear or damage during use can also cause shorts. The preregulator is fused to prevent current surges that can result in power supply damage to the 2301 governor control.
(1) Disconnect the batteries. Remove the two nuts that hold top of 2301 governor control in place. Put 4W5391 Preregulator Box Assembly (1) in position on the governor control, and install two nuts.
(2) For 2301 speed control units only, disconnect 12-40 VDC leads (2) from terminals 1 and 2. For 2301 load sharing and speed control units, disconnect 20-40 VDC leads (2) from terminals 12 and 13.
(3) Check the other ends of power supply leads (2). If these leads are not connected as close as possible to the battery (for example, if they are connected to the starter), remove them. If necessary, install new leads of the same gauge wire (make sure they are connected as close as possible to battery). Connect power supply leads (2) to appropriate BATTERY (+) and (-) terminals on preregulator.
(4) For 2301 speed control units only, connect wire (3) from preregulator (+) CONTROL terminal to (+) terminal 2 on the speed control. Connect wire (4) from preregulator (-) CONTROL terminal to (-) terminal 1 on the speed control. Connect the batteries.
(5) For 2301 load sharing and speed control units, connect wire (3) from preregulator (+) CONTROL terminal to (+) terminal 12 on the speed control. Connect wire (4) from preregulator (-) CONTROL terminal to (-) terminal (13) on the speed control. Connect the batteries.
