Installation Instructions

During the installation of this kit, apply the following instructions:

  • Use the standard torque for fasteners and for connectors unless a value is specified in the procedure.

  • Lubricate O-ring seals with a mineral-based refrigerant oil that is compatible with the R134A refrigerant before you install the seals.

  • Use a wrench to support the connectors when you torque the hose connections to the condenser coil to prevent damage to the condenser coil.

Raising the cab is necessary in order to install many of the component in this kit. Refer to Operation and Maintenance, "Tilting the Cab Upward". Refer to Operation and Maintenance, "Tilting the Cab Downward" for instructions.

Preparing for the Installation

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from hot coolant, steam and alkali.

At operating temperature, engine coolant is hot and under pressure. The radiator and all lines to heaters or the engine contain hot coolant or steam. Any contact can cause severe burns.

Remove filler cap slowly to relieve pressure only when engine is stopped and radiator cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Cooling System Conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes.

Charging the Air Conditioner System

  1. Use the procedure from Testing and Adjusting, SENR5664, "Complete Charge of the System from a Refrigerant Tank with a Scale" to charge the air conditioner system. This procedure is part of the Testing and Adjusting, SENR5664, "Air Conditioning and Heating R-134a for All Caterpillar Machines". This procedure can be obtained through the normal literature distribution system. This procedure can also be found on the Caterpillar Service Information System (SIS).

Note: Charge the system with 1.27 kg (2.8 lb) of R-134a refrigerant. Also add 80 cc (4.9 cubic inch) of 228-7840 Air Conditioner Oil .

Enabling Air Conditioning in Electronic Control Module (ECM)

The air conditioning will need to be installed through Electronic Technician (ET) on machines that have ECM 361-3092 Machine Software Gp or earlier. Refer to Illustration 37 and Illustration 38 below for installation selections.

Appendix

Instructions for Using Pressure Sensitive Adhesive

Note: The temperature of the adhesive and the temperature of the surface must be between 20 °C (68 °F) to 38 °C (100 °F). The surface must be smooth, clean, and dry.

  1. Clean the surface by wiping the surface with a 50/50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water. Allow the surface to dry completely.

  1. Remove the protective paper from the seal and press the seal in position.

  1. Use a roller or a similar device and apply a minimum of 103 kPa (15 psi) over the entire surface in order to bond the adhesive to the surface.

Note: Pay special attention to the edges and to the corners in order to ensure that these areas are bonded securely. Avoid conditions that would apply stress to the bond for 24 hours after installation.
