Note: Lubricate the bore for O-ring seal (2) lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.

Note: Preload the pinion bearings so that initially a torque that is higher than 4 N·m (35 lb in) is required to rotate the pinion. Rotate the pinion several times at the higher torque setting, and then preload pinion bearings so that a torque of 4 N·m (35 lb in) is required to rotate pinion. O-ring seal (2) is not to be installed until after adjustment is made.

Note: Lubricate seal assembly (4) lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.

(5) Torque for 16 bolts ... 270 ± 40 N·m (200 ± 30 lb ft)

Note: Apply 7M-7456 Compound to the threads of the bolts (5) .

(6) Shims

112-8223 Shim ... 0.1778 mm (0.00700 inch)
112-8224 Shim ... 0.12 mm (0.005 inch)

Note: Use shims (6), as needed.

(BB) Dimension ... 85.17 mm (3.35 inch)

Note: Dimension (BB) can be expected after pinion bearing preload had been adjusted accordingly.

(CC) Dimension ... 192.5 mm (7.58 inch)

(8) 9M-5874 Shim Pack

Total length ... 3.302 mm (0.13 inch)
ten shims ... 0.076 mm (0.003 inch)
20 shims ... 0.127 mm (0.005 inch)

Note: Use shims from shim pack (8) as needed.

(9) Torque for two bolts ... 100 ± 20 N·m (74 ± 15 lb ft)

Assembly of the Differential Group

  1. Prior to assembling the differential group, assembly the ring gear housing.

  1. Ream one hole to 19.05 ± 0.013 mm (0.75 ± 0.0005 inch) by using the ring gear as a guide.

  1. Install one bolt, then ream the 13 remaining holes to 19.05 ± 0.013 mm (0.75 ± 0.0005 inch).

  1. Tighten 14 nuts (1) to a torque of 440 ± 40 N·m (325 ± 29.5 lb ft).

Gear Adjustment

  1. After assembly of the differential group into the carrier assembly, support carrier assembly with axle centerline in the vertical position with cone and cup in lower position.

  1. Adjust cone and cup for 0.41 ± 0.13 mm (0.0161 ± 0.005 inch) backlash of pinion with bevel gear, then adjust cup and cone to preload bearing by increasing dimension (DD) from 0.64 mm (0.02520 inch) to 0.76 mm (0.02992 inch).

  1. Rotate ring gear in each direction for several revolutions.

  1. Decrease dimension (DD) to zero and then increase dimension (DD) to 0.51 ± 0.05 mm (0.0201 ± 0.002 inch).

  1. Recheck gear set backlash and adjust, if necessary by rotating adjusting nuts equal amounts.
