Description of Change: A new retainer and washers are now used in the rear wheel group. The new retainer has counterbored mounting holes. The new retainer and washers will provide an improved bolted joint.
Adaptable To: The new 354-7988 Retainer is a direct replacement for the former 208-8797 Retainer in the 243-5544 Rear Wheel Gp and 261-2354 Rear Wheel Gp .
The new 354-7988 Retainer is adaptable to the machines JRP1-2361 and JXP1-160.
The new 354-7988 Retainer is effective in production with the machines JRP2362-UP and JXP161-UP.

- Permit only one operator on the machine. Either keep other personnel away from the machine, or keep other personnel in the sight of the operator.
- Move the machine to a smooth horizontal location. Move away from any machines that are working and any personnel.
- Move the transmission control to the PARK position.
- Activate the parking brakes. Stop the engine and remove the ignition key.
- Turn the battery disconnect switch to OFF position.
- Place blocks in front of the wheels and behind the wheels.
- Remove the final drive group (6). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR8304, "777F Off-Highway Truck Power Train", "Final Drive - Remove".
Personal injury or death can result from machine movement. Place blocks in front of and behind the wheels to make sure the machine does not move while the parking brakes are disengaged. |

Personal injury can result from hot oil or hot components. At operating temperature, oil is hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns. Remove the fill cap only when the engine is stopped, and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin. |

- Remove the 12 bolts (3) and remove former retainer (5) and shim pack (4). Discard the bolts and the retainer. Save the shim pack.
- Reinstall the shim pack (4) that was removed in Step 8.

Note: Wheel bearing preload does not require adjustment.
- Assemble the new retainer (1) to the spindle by using 12 new bolts (3) and 12 new washers (2) .
Note: Apply red Loctite 271 to the threads of the 12 new bolts (3) .
- Tighten the bolts (3) to a torque of 125 ± 20 N·m (92 ± 15 lb ft). Again, tighten the bolts to a torque of 270 ± 40 N·m (199 ± 30 lb ft).
- Assemble the final drive group (6) that was removed in Step 7. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR8304, "777F Off-Highway Truck Power Train", "Final Drive - Install".
