Relief Valve (Steering) - Test and Adjust

Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil under pressure can cause serious injury to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent possible injury, perform the procedure that follows before testing and adjusting the hydraulic system.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

(6) Adjustment screw

Note: This procedure applies to steering pumps with an adjustable relief. Check for adjustment screw (6) on the rear of the steering pump in order to determine the type of steering pump.

( 1 ) Use either Tool (A) or tool (B). Tool (A) was used in this procedure.

Note: Perform the following steps before this procedure is conducted:

  • Park the machine on a smooth, horizontal surface.

  • Place the propulsion control lever in Neutral.

  • Engage the parking brake.

  • Stop the engine.

  1. Remove pin (1) and engage steering lock pin (2) .

  1. Connect item (A2) from Tool (A) to pressure tap (4) on steering pump (3) .

  1. Start and operate the engine at 2370 ± 50 rpm. Monitor the hydraulic oil temperature with tool (C). Operate the machine until the oil temperature reaches 43° ± 5.6°C (110° ± 10°F).

  1. Steer the machine against the steering lock pin. Record the pressure. The pressure should be 22000 ± 1000 kPa (3190 ± 145 psi).

  1. If the relief pressure needed to be adjusted, perform the following procedure:

      (6) Adjustment screw

    1. Locate pressure adjustment screw (6) on the bottom of steering pump (3) .

    1. Remove the dust cap and loosen locknut (5) .

    1. Turn pressure adjustment screw (6) in order to set the relief pressure to 22000 ± 1000 kPa (3190 ± 145 psi).

    1. Tighten locknut (5) and replace the dust cap.

  1. Stop the engine and remove the tooling. Disengage steering lock pin (2) and install pin (1) .
