New Cover for the Liquid Level Gauge for Transmission Oil {7479} Caterpillar

Introduction

This Special Instruction provides information for improving the visibility of the liquid level gauge for the transmission oil on the 836H Landfill Compactor. A new sliding cover for the liquid level gauge is placed on the machine in order to improve visibility.

Do not perform any procedure in this publication or order any parts until you understand the information that is contained in this publication.

Machine Preparation

1. Move the machine to a surface that is smooth, hard, and level. Move the machine to an area that is away from operating machines and away from personnel.

2. Install blocks on the front and the rear of the front wheels.

3. Install the steering frame lock.

1. Remove six 5P-1076 Hard Washers (2) and six 8T-4192 Bolts (3).

2. Discard 257-5005 Guard Assembly (1) .

   Note: The bolts and washers will be used to install the new guard assembly.

3. Remove two 121-7958 Bolts (5) .

4. Remove two 8T-4179 Bolts (9) and two 8T-4223 Hard Washers (10) .

5. Discard 164-6420 Bracket (8) .

   Note: Reuse 121-7958 Bolts (5), 132-6277 Liquid Level Gauge (11), 8T-4179 Bolts (9) and the 8T-4223 Hard Washers .

Installing New Hardware

(5) Two 121-7958 Bolts (6) Two 124-0689 Adapters (7) Two 6V-9168 Nuts (9) Two 8T-4179 Bolts (10) Two 8T-4223 Hard Washers (11) 132-6277 Liquid Level Gauge (12) 288-2787 Bracket

1. Install 132-6277 Liquid Level Gauge (11) on new 288-2787 Bracket (12) with 121-7958 Bolts (5) .

2. Install new 288-2787 Bracket (12) with 8T-4179 Bolts (9) and 8T-4223 Hard Washers (10) .

3. Place 287-6615 Strip (14) on the inside of bracket (13) on new 287-7514 Guard Assembly (15). Install 287-6615 Strip (14) with the tapped hole toward the bottom.

4. Insert 7X-2619 Bolt (16) with two 9X-8256 Washers (17) .

5. Tighten six 8T-4192 Bolts (3) with six 5P-1076 Hard Washers (2) in order to install new 287-7514 Guard Assembly (15) .

6. Clean the area that will contain 173-5421 Identification Plate (18) .

7. Place 173-5421 Identification Plate (18) on the cleaned area.

   Note: Be sure to line up the fill and full areas on 173-5421 Identification Plate (18) with the corresponding areas on 132-6277 Liquid Level Gauge (11) .
