A. Open the bottom of the box (where the date code is stamped) the new 1R-0716 Engine Oil Filter comes in.

2. Remove the seal from the filter.

3. Place the seal (rib side up) on the cleaned work bench surface.

4. Carefully position the filter on the seal so the seal rib fits into the groove in the aluminum top plate groove.

5. Insert the seal into the groove with a sharp downward motion of the filter.

6. If the seal is not free to rotate in the groove, repeat Step 5 or use hand pressure to work the seal into the groove.

7. When the seal is completely installed in the groove, the seal will rotated in the groove with little effort.

8. If the seal can not be correctly inserted into the groove, return the filter to your Caterpillar Dealer for credit.

C. Lubricate the seal with a thin film of clean oil.

D. Drain the engine oil and remove the used engine oil filter.

1. Clean the stud completely and remove any oil and/or varnish with a suitable solvent.

2. Inspect the stud threads for nicks.

3. Check to be sure the stud is tight in the filter base.

F. Install the new 1R-0716 Engine Oil Filter:

2. Hand tighten only.

3. Count the number of complete turns until the filter seal contacts the filter base (7 to 9 turns).

4. Slowly turn the filter until the filter seal contacts the filter base. Note the position of a filter index mark (each filter has 4 index marks) in relation to the filter base.

5. After the filter seal firsts contacts the filter base, turn the filter an additional 3/4 turn. If necessary, use a strap wrench to get the required additional 3/4 turn.

6. Do NOT over tighten the filter.
