Description of Change: The bolts, washers, and procedure used to fasten the pilot to the lockup clutch housing on certain Petroleum Transmissions and On-Highway Transmissions has been improved.

A longer 6V-3940 Bolt and a thicker 8E-9571 Hard Washer is used to improve the bolted joint of the 260-9534 Pilot to the lockup clutch housing. Loctite 272 (Red) is also used in combination with the longer bolt and thicker washer.

The torque converter serial number is listed on the transmission serial number plate. The torque converter serial number can be referenced without removing the transmission. Refer to tables, 1 and 2 for the effective and adaptable torque converters.

1. Remove existing six 6V-5217 Bolts (5) and existing six 9M-1974 Hard Washers (6) from pilot (3). Pilot (3) is fastened against lockup clutch housing (4) .

2. Use a rubber mallet to strike the nose of pilot (3) in order to bottom the pilot against the lockup clutch housing.

3. Apply Loctite 272 (Red) to the threads of six bolts (1) .

4. Install six bolts (1) and six washers (2) as shown in Illustration 5. Pre-torque bolts (1) to 12 N·m (8.9 lb ft) in the order of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

5. Final torque the six bolts to 30 ± 5 N·m (22.0 ± 3.7 lb ft) in the order of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
