Inability to Flash ECM Software on Certain Generator Sets{7620}

Usage:

3456 C3G
Engine:
3456 (S/N: C3G1-722; C4G1-539)

Introduction

The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

Some 3456 Generator Sets may not be able to install the ECM software when you use Caterpillar Win Flash. Due to the fact that the polarity of the ATA data link is not being matched correctly, the ECM software will create a communication error. In these cases, the error message will read "ECM not flashible".

Solution

Check for the correct polarity of the ATA data link at the customer connection terminal strip. The correct polarity will have a negative terminal 22 and a positive terminal 23. Matching polarity will remedy the problem. A complete system check can be performed by measuring resistance from the negative service connector pin H to positive pin 40 on the engine socket and the negative pin J of the service connector to the positive pin 39 on the engine socket.
