(1) Brake drum (2) Brake linings (3) Parking brake actuator (4) Lever (5) Rod |
The parking brake is fastened to the rear of the transmission transfer gears. Brake drum (1) is fastened to a flange on the output shaft of the transfer gears. The brake linings are a shoe type brake that is engaged and released by parking brake actuator (3) .
When the knob for the parking brake control knob is in the OFF position, air pressure in the parking brake actuator causes rod (5) and lever (4) to move toward the brake actuator. Lever (4) is connected to a camshaft, which causes the camshaft to turn in a clockwise direction. The camshaft and the brake linings are now separated. The brake linings and brake drum (1) are also separated. The parking brake is released.
When the knob for the parking brake control valve is depressed, the air pressure in the parking brake actuator is released. The springs in the parking brake actuator pull rod (5) inward. Lever (4) moves away from parking brake actuator (3). This action turns the camshaft in a counterclockwise direction. The camshaft makes contact with brake linings (2) and the brake linings make contact with brake drum (1). The parking brake is now engaged.
