When the Caterpillar Monitoring System is in the normal mode, consider the following conditions:

  • The fault present indicator shows "SERV CODE" when ANY fault is present with only the Caterpillar Monitoring System.

  • The alert indicator for the Machine ECM will be flashing when a fault is present in the Machine ECM.

Procedure

Use the following procedure to troubleshoot the service code information. Locate the service switches that are located under the operator console.

  1. Place the Caterpillar Monitoring System in service mode (mode 3). In order to place the Caterpillar Monitoring system in service mode, press and hold the mode scroll switch (7). Release the mode scroll switch when "-3-" is shown on the display.

  1. A service code is displayed and the service code is on hold at this time. The display toggles between showing MID (3) and CID (5) and FMI (6). When there are no service codes, screen (1) shows "---" only.

  1. In order to view all the service codes, scroll through the service codes. In order to scroll through the service codes, press and hold the Increment / Hold / Clear / Store Switch (8) in the INCREMENT position. The display momentarily shows MID (3), CID (5) and FMI (6) for each service code. The word "End" is shown after the last service code in the list.

  1. Place the desired service code on hold. In order to place the service code on hold, release the Increment / Hold / Clear / Store Switch (8) when the desired service code is shown.

  1. The MID will indicate that the ECM is generating the service code. If the MID is not "029", refer to the System Operation, "Daignostic Capabilities" section of this manual for the control that is generating the service code.

  1. Observe service code indicator (4). In the service mode, the service code indicator functions as a fault present indicator.

    • If service code indicator (4) shows "SERV CODE", then the fault that caused the service code is currently present.

    • If service code indicator (4) is OFF, then the fault that caused the service code is not present at this time.

  1. In order to troubleshoot the service code, go to the procedure with the same CID and the same FMI in the Diagnostic Procedures section of this manual.

  1. After a service code is corrected, clear the service code. Before clearing the service code, ensure that all of the harness connectors are reconnected and ensure that all of the damaged insulation in the wire is repaired. In order to clear a service code, momentarily press the Increment / Hold / Clear / Store Switch (8) in the CLEAR position while the service code is on hold. After clearing, the display advances to the next available service code.

  1. Repeat steps 2 through 8 for the remaining service codes. Return to the normal mode when you are finished. Press the mode scroll switch and hold the mode scroll switch (7) in order to return to the normal mode. Release the switch when the display is showing normal information.
