Personal injury or death can result from high voltage. When power generation equipment must be in operation to make tests and/or adjustments, high voltage and current are present. Improper test equipment can fail and present a high voltage shock hazard to its user. Make sure the testing equipment is designed for and correctly operated for high voltage and current tests being made. When servicing or repairing electric power generation equipment:
Failure to do so could result in personal injury or death. Make sure residual voltage in the rotor, stator and the generator is discharged. |
When work is being done on a generator, the following general rules should be used as a guide:
- Before you work on the generator, the operating principles must be understood.
- When the generator set is operating, the generator is a constant speed unit. An RPM that varies can cause terminal voltages to vary. When the rpm exceeds the rated rpm (5% to 10%), the terminal voltage could exceed the rated output voltage (5% to 10%). When the rpm is lower than the rated rpm (5% to 10%), the terminal voltage could be lower than the rated output voltage (5% to 10%).
- Generator heat is caused by line current. As the line current increases, the generator temperature increases.
