Accidental machine starting can cause injury or death to personnel working on the machine. To avoid accidental machine starting, turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position and remove the key. If the machine is not equipped with a battery disconnect switch, disconnect the battery cables from the battery and tape the battery clamps. Place a do not operate tag at the battery disconnect switch location to inform personnel that the machine is being worked on. |

Place the harvester head in the horizontal position.
Note: Under normal operating conditions, the saw chain may need to be replaced several times per eight hour shift.
- Move the control valve (4) out of the housing (3) and into the open position.

- Apply 157-2184 Holder Release Tool. Pull the holder release tool toward the end of the saw bar. This will relieve the tension on the saw chain. Pull the holder release tool slowly until the saw bar stops.
Note: The 157-2184 Holder Release Tool is shipped with the harvester head.

- Move the control valve toward the saw motor into the locked position. This will lock the saw bar in the current position.
- Remove the holder release tool and remove the saw chain.
- Install a new chain.
- Install the holder release tool and pull the tool toward the tip of the saw bar.

Note: Be sure that the direction of the chain is correct after installation. The chain should be installed so the depth gauge faces the travel of the chain. See illustration 5.
- While you are pulling on the handle of the holder release tool, move the control valve into the operating position.
- Slowly remove pressure from the holder release tool and allow the saw bar to move outward. Tension should be applied to the saw chain automatically. Be sure that the chain is properly installed in the track of the saw bar. Be sure that the chain is around the drive sprocket.
- No slack should be present in the chain. If slack in the saw chain is evident, blockages may exist in the attachment for the saw bar. See Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Bar Guide Axle - Clean/Inspect/Replace" and Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lock Pin (Saw Bar Tensioner) - Inspect / Replace".
The oil level of the tensioner may be low. Fill the tensioner with oil. Use the following procedure in order to check the oil level and fill the tensioner with oil. See Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Saw Bar Tensioner Oil - Change".
