This diagnostic code is for the CAT Data Link.
CID 0248 FMI 09 is for the D10R and for the D11R. This diagnostic code is recorded when the power train ECM does not receive the information on engine speed. The power train ECM may log a CID 0168 FMI 04 diagnostic code for low battery voltage during engine cranking.
The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed below:
- There is a poor electrical connection at a machine harness connector.
- The circuit for the CAT Data Link in the machine harness is open.
- The circuit for the CAT Data Link in the machine harness is shorted to ground.
- The circuit for the CAT Data Link in the machine harness is shorted to positive voltage.
- The engine ECM has lost power or the engine ECM has failed.
Note: During flash programming of an ECM, the ECM does not perform the normal data link communications with the other Electronic Control Modules on the machine. When you flash program an ECM, the other Electronic Control Modules may record a CID 0248 FMI 09. Also, a CID 0248 FMI 02 may be recorded. In these cases, after the flash programming is completed, the diagnostic code indicator will NOT show "SERV CODE" for the CID 0248. The CID 0248 diagnostic code can be cleared. If the diagnostic code indicator does not show "SERV CODE" for a CID 0248, DO NOT replace any ECM on a machine.
Note: Ensure that the CID 0248 FMI 09 is on hold and that the diagnostic code indicator shows "SERV CODE".
Test Step 1. CHECK THE +BATTERY CIRCUIT AT THE CONNECTORS OF THE ECM.
- Turn the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
- Disconnect the harness connectors from the ECM.
- Turn the disconnect switch to the ON position.
- At the harness connector, connect the positive lead of the multimeter to J1-1 and connect the negative lead of the multimeter to J1-2.
- Measure the voltage.
Expected Result:
The voltage should measure 21.3 to 32.5 VDC.
Results:
- OK - The voltage measures 21.3 to 32.5 VDC. The engine ECM is receiving the correct power. Proceed to Test Step 2.
- NOT OK - The voltage does not measure 21.3 to 32.5 VDC.
Repair: The engine ECM is NOT receiving the correct power. The power circuit to the engine ECM inthe machine harness has failed. Repair the power circuit to the engine ECM.
STOP
Test Step 2. INSPECT THE HARNESS CONNECTORS.
- Turn the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
- Inspect the machine harness connectors that are related to CAT Data Link circuits.
Expected Result:
The connector contacts are clean and tight.
Results:
- OK - The connector contacts are clean and tight. Proceed to Test Step 3.
- NOT OK - The connector contacts are not clean and tight.
Repair: Repair the connectors of the machine harness or replace the connectors of the machine harness.
STOP
Test Step 3. CHECK FOR A SHORT CIRCUIT TO GROUND.
- The disconnect switch remains OFF.
- Disconnect the machine harness from all electronic control modules that use the CAT data link.
- At the machine harness connector for the power train ECM, measure the resistance between the CAT data link circuits (contacts J1-3 and J1-9) and all possible sources of ground. The possible sources of ground are contact J1-2, contact J1-5, contact J1-7, contact J1-15, contact J1-16, contact J2-3 and frame ground.
Expected Result:
Each resistance should be greater than 5000 ohms for each measurement.
Results:
- OK - Each resistance is greater than 5000 ohms for each measurement. The machine harness is correct. Proceed to Test Step 4.
- NOT OK - Each resistance is not greater than 5000 ohms for each measurement.
Repair: The short is between the circuit with the low resistance measurement and wire 892-BR(Brown) or 893-GN(Green). Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.
STOP
Test Step 4. CHECK FOR A SHORT CIRCUIT TO POSITIVE VOLTAGE.
- The disconnect switch remains OFF. All related Electronic Control Modules remain disconnected from the machine harness.
- At the machine harness connector for the power train ECM, measure the resistance between the CAT data link circuits (contacts J1-3 and J1-9) and all possible sources of positive voltage. The possible sources of positive voltage are contacts J1-1, J1-4, J1-6, J1-8, J1-10, J1-11, J1-12, J1-17, J1-18, J1-40, J2-1, J2-2, J2-7, J2-8, J2-13, J2-19, and J2-37.
Expected Result:
Each resistance should be greater than 5000 ohms for each measurement.
Results:
- OK - Each resistance is greater than 5000 ohms for each measurement. The machine harness is correct. Proceed to Test Step 5.
- NOT OK - Each resistance is not greater than 5000 ohms for each measurement.
Repair: There is a short in the machine harness. The short is between the circuit with the low resistance measurement and wire 892-BR(Brown) or 893-GN(Green). Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.
STOP
Test Step 5. CHECK THE CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN IN THE MACHINE HARNESS.
- The disconnect switch remains OFF. All related Electronic Control Modules remain disconnected from the machine harness.
- At the power train ECM, measure the resistance from J1-3 (892-BR(Brown)) to the corresponding connector contacts at each of the other Electronic Control Modules.
- At the power train ECM, measure the resistance from J1-9 (893-GN(Green)) to the corresponding connector contact at each of the other Electronic Control Modules.
Expected Result:
There should be less than 5.0 ohms resistance for every measurement.
Results:
- OK - There is less than 5.0 ohms resistance for every measurement.
Repair: The Cat data link circuit in the machine harness is correct. It is unlikely that the ECM has failed. Exit this procedure. Enter this procedure again. Ensure that the CID 0248 FMI 09 is on hold and that the diagnostic code indicator shows "SERV CODE". Ensure that the module identifier (MID) is 113. If the diagnostic code indicator does not show "SERV CODE" for a CID 0248, DO NOT replace any ECM on a machine.
STOP
- NOT OK - There is not less than 5.0 ohms resistance for every measurement.
Repair: The data link circuit (892-BR(Brown) or 893-GN(Green)) is open in the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.
