3176C, 3196 and 3406E Engines for 725, 730, 735, 740, and 740 Ejector Articulated Trucks Caterpillar

Excessive White Smoke

Usage:

3176C 3PD
Note: Some white smoke may be present during cold start-up conditions when the engine is operating normally. If the white smoke persists, there may be a problem.

Probable Causes

  • Cold mode

  • Water temperature regulators

  • Engine speed/timing sensors

  • Unit injectors

  • Personality module

  • Fuel supply

  • Component wear

  • Cooling system

Recommended Actions

Cold mode

The ECM will set the cold start strategy when the coolant temperature is below 18 °C (64 °F).

When the cold start strategy is activated, low idle rpm will be increased to 1000 rpm and the engine's power will be limited.

Cold mode operation will be deactivated when any of the following conditions have been met:

  • Coolant temperature reaches 18 °C (64 °F).

  • The engine has been running for fourteen minutes.

Cold mode operation varies the fuel injection amount for white smoke cleanup. Cold mode operation also varies the timing for white smoke cleanup. The engine operating temperature is usually reached before the walk-around inspection is completed. The engine will idle at the programmed low idle rpm in order to be put in gear.

Water Temperature Regulators

  1. Check the water temperature regulators for correct operation. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Cooling System" for the proper procedure.

  1. If necessary, replace the water temperature regulators. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Water Temperature Regualtor - Remove and Install" for more information.

Engine Speed/Timing Sensors

  1. Check the calibration of the primary engine speed/timing sensor (crankshaft) and the calibration of the secondary engine speed/timing sensor (camshaft) if the following diagnostic code is present.

    • CID 261-FMI 13, SPN 228-FMI 13, Flash 42 Engine Timing Calibration required

Refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Speed/Timing Sensor - Calibrate".

  1. Verify that the crankshaft and camshaft drive gears are set with the proper orientation. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Camshaft - Remove and Install".

Unit Injectors

  1. Use ET in order to perform the cylinder cutout test. Use similar conditions for the test that were experienced during operation. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Injector Solenoid Circuit - Test".

  1. Cut out the individual cylinder for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Verify that the smoke decreases.

Personality Module

Verify that the correct personality module is installed. Refer to Troubleshooting, "System Configuration Parameters".

Fuel Supply

  1. Inspect the fuel system components.

  1. Check for correct fuel pressure.

  1. Check fuel quality. Low cetane fuel can create white smoke. Replace the fuel with a higher cetane fuel. In temperatures below 0 °C (32 °F), check for solidified fuel (wax). Refer to Special Instruction, SEBD0717, "Diesel Fuels And Your Engine".

  1. If necessary, replace the fuel with a higher cetane fuel.

Component Wear

Check the engine for the following problems: Excessive valve wear, piston wear, ring wear, liner wear and reduced compression pressure.

Cooling System

Check for a coolant leak. Check the cooling system for the following problems: coolant in cylinder and coolant in exhaust system. Refer to the Systems Operation, "Testing and Adjusting".
