Test the steering for binding

If the steering wheel turns hard, you need to perform the following test:

1. Park on a level surface. Engage the parking brake. Stop the engine and install the steering frame locks. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7379, "Steering Frame Lock".

2. Disconnect the steering column from the steering metering pump at joint (2) .

3. Check the steering column for free movement. If the steering column moves freely, connect joint (2) and loosen bolts (1). Do not remove bolts (1) .

4. Check the steering column for free movement. If the steering column moves freely it is possible that the metering pump is binding. Hold the steering metering pump in place and tighten bolts (1) .

5. Check the steering column for free movement. If the steering column does not move freely, replace any parts that are binding. If the steering metering pump is binding, replace the steering metering pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR3402, "Metering Pump (Steering) - Remove" and Disassembly and Assembly, RENR3402, "Metering Pump (Steering) - Install".

6. When you assemble the steering column, make sure that the two joints are out-of-phase with each other.

7. Remove the steering frame locks.

Test the steering wheel for centering

1. Stop the engine and install the steering frame locks. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7379, "Steering Frame Lock".

2. Turn the steering wheel slightly in either direction and release. The steering wheel should return toward the center position.

3. If the steering wheel does not return toward the center position, replace the metering pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, SENR3402, "Metering Pump (Steering) - Remove" and Disassembly and Assembly, RENR3402, "Metering Pump (Steering) - Install".

4. Remove the steering frame locks.
