Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement. Personnel can be injured during the steering check. To help prevent possible personal injury, keep all personnel away from the machine or in clear view of the operator when the machine is in operation during steering checks. |
Test the maximum pressure
- Park on a level surface. Engage the parking brake. Install the steering frame locks. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7379, "Steering Frame Lock". Stop the engine and make sure that the hydraulic pressure is zero before any lines are opened.
- Install a 27580 kPa (4000 psi) pressure gauge to steering pressure tap (1) with a hose that is long enough to reach the cab.

Pressure tap (1) for the steering is located at the rear of the tractor on the right side. |
- Disconnect load sensing line (2) from the signal and pressure reducing valve. Cap the disconnected line and plug the load sense port.

The signal and pressure reducing valve is located to the right of the transmission in front of the ejector control valve. The access panels have been removed for photographic clarity. (2) Load sensing line |
- Start the engine and run the engine at high idle.
- Articulate the machine into one of the steering frame locks and hold the steering wheel in that position. Read the pressure on the gauge. Repeat this procedure for the other direction.
- The pressure should be 22000 ± 345 kPa (3190 ± 50 psi) in both directions.
Note: If the readings do not match, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Steering System Troubleshooting".
- Straighten the machine. Stop the engine and remove the test equipment. Connect the load sensing line to the signal and pressure reducing valve and remove the steering frame locks.
Adjust the maximum pressure

Note: If the steering pressure is not 22000 ± 345 kPa (3190 ± 50 psi), stop the engine and adjust the pump compensator (2) .
- Remove the cap over the adjustment screw for compensator (3). Loosen the jam nut. Turn the adjustment screw of the compensator in the clockwise direction in order to increase the pressure setting. Turn the adjustment screw of the compensator in the counterclockwise direction in order to decrease the pressure setting. One turn of the adjustment screw is equivalent to approximately 5500 kPa (800 psi). Do not turn the adjustment bolt more than 1/4 turn at a time.

- Repeat steps 5 through 8 until the proper pump output pressure is achieved. If the proper pump output pressure cannot be achieved, repair the pump compensator or replace the pump compensator. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR3402, "Pressure Flow Compenstor Valve (Steering) - Remove".

Test the margin pressure
- Park on a level surface. Engage the parking brake. Install the steering frame locks. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7379, "Steering Frame Lock". Stop the engine and make sure that the hydraulic pressure is zero before any lines are opened.
- Install a 6900 kPa (1000 psi) differential pressure gauge between pressure tap (1) for the steering and load sense port (7) with a hose that is long enough to reach the cab.
