Illustration 1 | g00646204 |
The transmission control is located on the console on the right side of the operator's seat. The control includes the following switches:
- Neutral lock switch (1)
- Transmission hold switch (2)
- High gear selector switch (3)
Press neutral lock switch (1), and move the transmission control in order to select the following gears.
"R" - REVERSE gear
"D" - DRIVE
"3" - THIRD gear
"2" - SECOND gear
"1" - FIRST gear
When the transmission control is in the D position, the transmission will upshift automatically and the transmission will downshift automatically. The transmission will shift according to the load, engine speed, ground conditions and the grade.
When the transmission control is in the 3 position, the transmission will upshift and the transmission will downshift automatically between first gear and third gear.
When the transmission control is in the 2 position, the transmission will upshift and the transmission will downshift automatically between first gear and second gear.
When the transmission control is in the 1 position, the transmission will remain in first gear.
When the transmission control is in the R position, the transmission will shift to reverse gear.
Illustration 2 | g00646333 |
High gear selector switch (3) is used to set an upshift limit.
The panel (4) for actual gear indicator is located below the tachometer. The panel will display digits from one to seven. An "F" will show for the forward gears. An "R" will show for the reverse gear. Each digit will flash for four seconds. When the digit for the desired highest gear is flashing the high gear selector switch must be released. To set an upshift limit, the engine must be running and the transmission control must be in the D position. Depress the switch and hold the switch for five seconds. The indicator will display the following choices:
- "4F" for FOURTH GEAR
- "5F" for FIFTH GEAR
- "6F" for SIXTH GEAR
- "7F" for SEVENTH GEAR
If you select one of these choices, the transmission will not upshift higher than the gear that has been selected. If drive is selected, the transmission will automatically shift between all seven forward gears.
To confirm the selected highest gear, the display will flash for four seconds after the high gear selector switch is released. In this mode, the transmission will upshift and the transmission will downshift between first gear and the selected gear.
The transmission will revert to full range of operation on the D400E Series II, if high gear selector switch (3) is pushed in and the switch is held. Hold high gear selector switch (3) until the "7F" is flashing. The transmission will revert to full range of operation also if the engine is switched off.
As you increase engine speed and the ground speed increases, the transmission will upshift. As the ground speed continues to increase, the transmission will upshift automatically until the selected gear is reached.
If the ground speed is reduced or the engine speed is reduced by an increased load, the transmission will automatically downshift in order to select the correct gear. The transmission downshifts one gear at a time in order to select the correct gear.
A downshift inhibitor prevents the operator from forcing a downshift. When the machine is in motion and the transmission control is moved to a lower gear, the transmission will not force a sudden downshift. The transmission will not downshift until the proper ground speed is achieved.
Regardless of the position of the transmission control, if the machine is moving down a grade and the engine is allowed to overspeed, the transmission will upshift.
For an example, if third gear is selected the transmission will still upshift to fourth gear. If an upshift limit has been set with the transmission control lever in the D position, the transmission will override the set limit.
Illustration 3 | g00691757 |
The transmission will only make one upshift. If overspeed continues after the one upshift, engine damage may occur.
Illustration 4 | g00647770 |
If the engine speed rises to 50 rpm of the point of override, engine overspeed indicator (5) and action light (6) will be illuminated. To avoid an upshift, ground speed must be reduced. To reduce the engine speed to normal operating range, use the service brakes and/or the engine compression brake.
The machine must be stopped and the engine must be operating at low idle before you change from forward gear to reverse gear or from reverse gear to forward gear.
The machine must always be driven at a speed that is in accordance with the load that is being carried. The condition of the site, and the condition of the weather will also govern the speed of the machine.
