An update to the VIMS onboard software and the VIMS onboard hardware will be factory installed on off-highway trucks in early 2000. As this update becomes available on other VIMS machines, the updates will be announced in future articles. The following information describes the new features of the updated Vital Information Management System.
The 10.0X Class of VIMS Onboard Software
The 10.0X class of VIMS onboard software is only compatible with the VIMS Version 4.0 hardware or later. The VIMS version 4.0 hardware is not a direct replacement for the earlier VIMS versions 3.0 hardware and VIMS versions 2.0 hardware.
VIMSpc99
The VIMSpc99 version 1.1.5 or later software MUST be used in order to perform the following functions:
- View the onboard VIMS data.
- Download the onboard VIMS data.
Earlier versions of VIMSpc99 and VIMS-PC V2.4.3 or earlier software will not function with this new update.
Improved Communication With the Service Tool
The speed of the serial port connection between VIMSpc99 and the ECM has been increased from 19.2 K baud to 38.4 K baud. This will reduce the amount of time that is required for the service tool to be connected to the machine in order to download onboard VIMS data.
Installing the Onboard Software
The new software and the new hardware now require the Electronic Technician in order to flash the onboard software into the electronic control module. The source software and configuration software are now combined into a single flash file. VIMSpc99 is still used to set the "serial number" and "equipment number" information.
Truck Payload Enhancements
The truck payload measurement system has been improved by the implementation of a "second gear reweigh strategy". This means that the VIMS now waits until the truck is in second gear and away from the load site before the final payload calculation is made. This strategy eliminates several of the factors that adversely affect the calculation of the payload weight. There have also been improvements made to the payload software that make the payload calculations less prone to errors that are caused by environmental factors.
Service Program Codes
The service program codes that were used by previous VIMS software are also used by the new 10.0X class of VIMS onboard software. The functionality of these codes remain the same.
Dimmer Switch
A momentary rocker switch is now used to dim the instrument panel backlighting. Holding the upper portion of the rocker switch down will cause the backlighting to brighten and holding the lower portion of the rocker switch down will cause the backlighting to dim.
New Prognostic Definitions
New prognostic definitions in the onboard software have eliminated the need for model dependent master data files.

Integration of Electronic Controls
The VIMS main module and interface modules have been integrated into a single electronic control module. This electronic control module is equipped with two 70 pin connectors. The single electronic control module reduces data traffic on the CAT data link. Overall system reliability has been improved by eliminating the additional electronic control modules. Troubleshooting of the diagnostic codes have been simplified by the use of a single electronic control module.
