NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Make sure that the following conditions exist:

    • The dump body is fully lowered.

    • The engine is off.

    • The hydraulic pressure is zero.

    • The steering frame locks are installed.

Note: Perform this procedure on both cylinders simultaneously. Damage may result if only one cylinder is tested.

  1. Disconnect the line from the head end port (1) of both hoist cylinders and cap the lines. Attach a length of tubing to each head end port (1) and direct the other end into a suitable container.

Note: Some oil may discharge from the connection. Allow the oil to drain before you perform the test.

  1. Start the engine and run the engine at low idle.

  1. Instruct an assistant to hold the hoist lever in the lower position. This will force the dump body into the frame.

  1. Look for a continuous discharge of oil from either of the tubings. This would indicate a leak in the piston seal. Also check for leaks at the rod seals.

If there is a leak, rebuild that hoist cylinder. See Disassembly and Assembly, SENR9129, "Hoist Cylinder - Remove".

  1. Install the lines that were disconnected and remove the steering frame locks.
