Removal Procedure
At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure. Steam can cause personal injury. Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with the bare hand. Remove the filler cap slowly to relieve pressure. Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes to prevent personal injury. |

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
- Open the engine access door.
- Release the latch on the radiator. Raise the radiator. This will allow access to the water pump.
- Drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container for storage or disposal.
Note: The radiator is located at a higher level than the engine. It will be necessary to drain the radiator in order to replace the water pump.
- Remove five bolts (1). Remove pulley cover (2) .

- Loosen bolt (3) on the top of alternator (4) .

- Move alternator (4). This will release the tension on alternator belt (5) .
- Remove alternator belt (5) .
- Loosen hose clamp (6). Remove hose (7) from the water pump.

- Loosen hose clamp (8). Remove hose (9) from the water pump.

- Remove four bolts (10) and remove pulley (11) .

- Remove two nuts (12). Remove two bolts (13) .

- Remove water pump (14) .
- Remove the bolts (15) on the rear of the water pump. Remove gasket (16). Remove plate (17) .
Note: Gasket (16) and plate (17) may be a part of water pump (14).

Installation Procedure
- Install new gasket (16) onto the rear of the water pump. Install plate (17) and the bolts (15) on the rear of the water pump.
Note: When gasket (16) is being replaced, completely clean the rear surface of the water pump prior to assembly.

- Install water pump (14) on the engine.

- Install two bolts (13) and two nuts (12) .
- Install pulley (11). Secure pulley (11) with four bolts (10) .

- Install hose (9). Secure hose (9) with hose clamp (8) .

- Install hose (7). Secure hose (7) with hose clamp (6) .

- Install alternator belt (5) .

- Move alternator (4) into position.
Note: Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7468 about the tension of the alternator belt.
- Tighten bolt (3) on the top of alternator (4) .
- Install pulley cover (2). Secure pulley cover (2) with five bolts (1) .

- Fill the radiator with coolant.
Note: Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7468 for the proper type and the proper quantity of coolant.
- Start the engine. Check the water pump and hoses for leaks. Check the alternator belt.
- Lower the radiator.
- Close the engine access door.
